Day 11

In your own space, ask for recs. Something as simple as "I like XYZ (where XYZ is a kink, a pairing, a trope, etc) - please rec me some." Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Okay - please rec me! I want to read outside my comfort zone, so I'm looking for recs for:

Torchwood (Jake/Gwen more than Jack/Ianto)
Doctor Who (Nine intrigues me more than Eleven)
Star Trek IXXI (All arrangements are welcome)
Harry Potter (Rare pairings preferred, anything with Sirius Black preferred)
The Curse of Chalion (or the whole series)
Sherlock Holmes (Granada or BBC, not the movie'verse, pls)

And anything else wonderful in any other fandom that you think I'd enjoy. Or something by your favorite writer or something unusual and unique that pushed YOUR buttons.

My Snowflake Challenge Entries:
Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3 | Day 4 (no entry) | Day 5 | Day 6 | Day 7 | Day 8 | Day 9 | Day 10 |

Okay, all of these are shortlists, and there is undoubtedly a bunch of really good stuff I'm forgetting at the moment because I didn't bookmark it in a useful way (often because I read it all the time and therefore don't need a bookmark). But it's someplace to start. And I choose to start with...

Doctor Who:

Anything by DameRuth, but to give you somewhere to start, I'd go with her Bliss!verse (Nine) if you're in the mood for something lighter or her Flowers!verse (Ten) for something grittier. For Bliss, start with Link--it's the core story. For Flowers, just start at the beginning, and know that there is eventually smut in it, if you're patient. ;-)

Also anything by LyricWritesProse ([profile] lyricwrites on LJ). She writes all over the map, so you'll just have to look and see which of the characters and pairings on any particular story looks most like what you're looking for, but she simply doesn't write anything that isn't fantastic.

Left Behind, by Azriona, is an utterly amazing look at how Jack Harkness ended up in the same universe Rose Tyler is stranded in. This one is Jack/Rose, past Nine/Jack/Rose and pre-Ten/Jack/Rose.

Survivor's Guilt, by Amberite, is the darkest, most intense Nine/Jack I've ever read.

What the Master Wants, by Becky H, is one of darkly triumphant moment in The Year That Never Was, while Jack and the Doctor are captive aboard the Valiant. Dub!con.

If you're up to more from the Valiant, check out Valiant Tales, by Robin C. ([personal profile] lindenharp on LJ)

Yamx does several really great series, but if I had to pick just one or two stories, I'd aim you at Look Down, which is long, plotty Jack/Doctor plus Rose, and An Overpowering Staleness, which is Nine/Jack/Rose...but it's an AU in which Nine is fobwatched, and temporarily human, and doesn't remember who he is.

Torchwood:

Wish You Were Here is teamfic by [personal profile] pocky_slash, conducted as a series of postcards, e-mails, reports, and sticky notes during the week Gwen is away on her honeymoon.

Fair Game, by Mimarie, is awesome, angsty, lovely Jack/Gwen kink. I love Jack/Gwen, but I've read very little I actually like, because most of it very much stands outside of the actual constraints of those characters in the series. This is that rare fic that takes them on head on, and it really, really works.

Sam Storyteller does awesome stuff, but most of his Torchwood is Jack/Ianto. You might still want to check out his master list at some point, but for a couple of specific recs, try The Quiet Room (I don't even know how to describe this, but I think you'll really like it) and Job Description (Ianto/everyone, but not all at once, and it's weirdly lovely and utterly devestating).

I recommend And Seven for a Secret to pretty much everybody, just because it's so incredibly well written and so very Torchwood and so very Jack . . . despite being written set during World War II. Complete with Indiana Jones-style dime novel Nazis. *g*

Weirdly, since I discovered Torchwood not long before Children of Earth aired, most of what I have bookmarked turns out to be from that point forward. So much of what came before was Jack/Ianto, and because I wasn't around in real time, I wasn't always able to catch the rest very well. But it's a start, I guess.

And I think I'm going to let somebody else do Sherlock. I only read lightly in that fandom, and my eyes are crossing.
