Day 8
In your own space, talk about a talent (or talents) you have. Everyone's got something they're good at. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.
I am a bit mishegas about talking about any special talents I have. As I think I wrote in the day one challenge, I was brought up never to speak well of myself. So I find it hard to do this. But I’m going to.
It’s not a fannish thing at all, and it goes back to the Day 5 challenge, but I am very good at certain aspects of jewelry makings. I can take a technique and rework it, improve a process and then teach it.

For example, about 4 years ago, I took a class in Japanese braiding (kumihimo). It was me and another student and the teacher. The class was about two hours long. I liked the results of the technique, but I couldn’t help but feel that some of the processes were aimed more for “getting it done” than for creating something professional looking. The teacher had no advice to give, which surprised me. She is a published author on the subject. I researched and still got nothing, so I “invented” a better process.
(I'm playing catchup here. I don't want to spam anyone's flist/rlist, so I'm posting these as Date Out of Order and will do a master catch up post).

Date: 2012-01-11 05:38 pm (UTC)My philosophy on talking about oneself in a positive way is that, if you're humble, there's no way telling the truth is going to sound arrogant. And not telling the truth about your gifts and your talents means not honoring who you are.
YOU are a great person in many ways and you are multi-talented. I realize it's difficult to go against a strong family teaching, but I'm so happy you did that here. You deserve to feel like you're great at the things you're great at. If you're not allowed to talk about it, you may not share them with the world, and what if that's essential -- to you and to everyone? What if believing in and sharing your gifts is the whole point?
