The Summer is Over...Let's Ramble

For years, I've been saying that Memorial Day, the Fourth of July and Labor Day are each separated by two weeks - that's how quickly time is flying by.
At least I have the High Holy Days to look forward to - not because I'm spending the time in temple - just because I can take the time off. My company's been so busy that all vacations (even just the random day here and there) have been cancelled for August AND September. The exception being, of course, religious holidays. For the record, I always have taken the first day of Rosh Hashona off, but never the second day.
Anyways, the time will be well spent. I will, hopefully, finish the Big Bang, which is now just shy of 40k, and may end up closer to 50k. I keep adding words, but the story never seems to come any closer to completion. My posting date is September 22, so in theory, I have plenty of time. But like I said above, time is flying by way too quickly.
On the subject of time, I've become sort of obsessed with the time it takes me to commute to and from work. My car has a nifty trip timer and I can't help but keep track of the lengeth of my journey. If there's one downside to House Wonderful, it's how far it is from any of the major highways. The condo I sold last year was a mere half-mile from the Expressway and my commute (absent an accident or construction) was 15 minutes, tops. House Wonderful is ten miles from the same highway and all the roads are local. The best time to work is a half-hour, now. I don't mind, the drive is mostly pleasant, but I find that I get annoyed if it takes me 17 minutes to get to the highway, instead of 14. Three minutes isn't going to make a difference in anyone's life, right? Right?
I am so out of the pop culture loop... I mean, I know who Miley Cyrus is, and I even know that she's gone from a Disney-fied good girl-next-door to out Madonna-ing Madonna in her hey-day, but I had no clue what twerking was until after her performance on the MTV Music Awards. Wikipedia was very educational.
If you find yourself in a similar position, or you need to describe what twerking is, I refer you to this utterly hysterical article from the New York Times - Explaining Twerking to Your Parents.
As many, MANY people have said, thank god that the casting of Fifty Shades has been announced. Can we now see an end to all the Matt Bomer IS Christian Gray tumblrs?
I've rambled before about the wildlife outside of my office window. There were the giant hawkmoths copulating on the volunteer sycamore sapling. The giant spider building a web across the entire outside window. About two weeks ago, the cutest little snail in a shell showed up, going up and down the window, across and back again, like some poor lost soul. After a few days, he parked himself in the shady upper quadrant, under the eves and has been there since. Just all curled up in his shell. It poured this morning - the first serious rain we've had in weeks - and I guess the little guy found the environment to his liking. He poked his head out of his shell and with all the speed he could muster, he slinked down the window and into the oblivion of the undergrowth.
I'm going to miss the little guy.
I keep thinking about a promptfest. I know, after the White Collar Big Bang is turned in, I need to get started on the Polyamory Big Bang. Except that that's NOT going to be epic (I hope), and frankly, I'm going to need some headspace before plunging back into a long project. So...how does the first week in October sound?
And since no ramble would be complete without the obligatory Bonus Bomer, I give you...

Date: 2013-09-03 03:21 pm (UTC)My wildlife, too many flies in house, and my one cat's hunter instinct being productive in reducing the mouse
population. Of course bringing his prize into the house is just...... Hmm, your big bang will be a nice late birthday present. But the 3D Wizard of Oz opens on my birthday.
Definitely understand the commute dilemma. First part of my journey is a a local road that just seems to attract snails and no where to pass. But the rest is major highways and requires more of my attention in merging and just plain driving than I like early in the morning. The return trip is just plain annoying due to the conjestion of "rush" hour traffic and poorly timed traffic lights.
Bonus Bomer: gloves and a (big) knife. How often do we see Neal with a knife/dragger?

Date: 2013-09-03 04:54 pm (UTC)And thank you Jesus that someone other than Matt Bomer got the role! I'm sorry, it's not that I wouldn't have enjoyed seeing Matt looking all lovely in CG's suits, it's just... have you read the book? Do you know what a crime against good writing it is? And to have Matt Bomer stuck dealing with that material... well, all I can say is I hope the screenwriter is better at writing than the author of the books, otherwise Charlie Hunnam just committed career suicide.
You know, one of these days I'm going to get to your promptfest email early enough to actually get a prompt written for me. It's a goal I have. Not a big one, but still, it's good to have a goal... so October works for me. Gives me enough time to come up with a really good prompt.
And to you, I wish you Shana Tova (I think I got that right) and many blessings in the coming year!

Date: 2013-09-04 01:02 pm (UTC)Promptfest is different from the prompt memes...it's more of a free-flowing writing exercise. I post a list of prompts and you write to one and then give me a prompt to write. When they work (and I don't find myself chasing a rabbit down a hole), it's a great way to write a lot of short fics in a very short time (my record is 17 prompts filled in one day).
I do hope you'll be able to play!
And thank you for the blessing.

Date: 2013-09-03 10:15 pm (UTC)I kinda knew what twerking was, but still had to ask Google for a reminder. Feh. (And of all the furor over Miley's performance, I have seen exactly one essay criticizing Robin Thicke. I didn't need a reminder about the Double Standard.)
Bonus Bomer is especially pretty.

Date: 2013-09-04 01:05 pm (UTC)And it's an election year, so every road has construction on in. Ugh.

Date: 2013-09-04 01:21 pm (UTC)No matter where I'm going, I have to drive through a construction zone at some point. It's a never-ending battle with the forces of nature (and road salt, and ridiculously high weight limits for trucks).

Date: 2013-09-04 06:54 am (UTC)I hear ya re: the commute. Nowadays it's easy peasy, half an hour with public transportation, but when I used to work in a different town, my commute on a good day was an hour and 15 minutes. One way. I've also needed two hours on occasion. Ah, the bad old times...
I'm all for a prompt fest! I had fun the last time, though I'm not entirely sure how much I can participate, what with, ya know, leaving on vacation soon after and all that. But hey, I'd love to give it a try, at least! :D
NO 50 SHADES OF CRAP FOR MATTY!!! \o/ \o/ \o/ (It's sad that I'm happy about Matt not playing in a movie, but seriously, this is not a role he needs to play. *shudders*)
And GUH Bonus Bomer. Leather gloves FTW! I personally prefer tighter/slimmer ones, but still, guh! And arms!!! :D But...I honestly don't recall where this is from. My, what a huge dagger? sword? you carry there...

This is a scene from the beginning of Ancient History.
On another note - a blog I follow (a bead artist) is in German and English, and the writer was railing against people who steal her patterns. In the English translation, she used the term "shit storm." So, naturally being curious, I scrolled back up to the German version and was surprised to see that the German for shit storm is ... 'Shitstorm.'
How disappointing!!!!

Date: 2013-09-04 06:45 pm (UTC)I totally don't remember that scene from Ancient History! O_o Holy crap, I really am getting old and senile, apparently. Damn 4-0. LOL!
As for the shitstorm thing...hee! There are a lot of English words in the German language. It gets really interesting when actual, real English words are used the wrong way. For example, you know which English word is used for cell phone? Handy. Not kidding, it's "handy". The real kicker is what's being used for fanny pack. "Body bag", NGL. Ah, the joys of foreign languages...

Date: 2013-09-05 07:34 am (UTC)FYI, I remember watching this ep & being struck (even more than usual) by how Neal/Matt looked even better with each scene (black tee, cream sweater, purple shirt...).
:-)

Date: 2013-09-05 08:36 am (UTC)You are wonderfully shallow-minded. I wholeheartedly approve! *fistbumps brain-twin* Hee!
I do remember the scene with the truck, I just totally blanked on the sword. Probably because of hot!Neal looking so hot. (YES, THAT IS A VALID EXCUSE.)
Also? The cop might have been annoying, but I kinda really liked Neal getting arrested. *g* He looked so damn cute sitting in the back of the patrol car at the beginning. ♥ And how he looked almost apologetic when he gave the cop his handcuffs back. ♥ ♥ ♥

Date: 2013-09-05 12:26 pm (UTC)Also, I think your excuse sounds totally valid. :-)
And I absolutely agree with your last point. I have no objection to getting to watch Neal be arrested. And it's got nothing to do with him in handcuffs. ::whistles innocently:: I also really like the bit with him giving the cop his cuffs back. And the whole "while we're correcting semantic gaffes" bit (antiques vs. antiquities, and Peter's, "Neal. Not helping.").
I also will always have a real soft spot for Ancient History, as the 1st time I went to the WC set to watch them film, they were shooting that ep (1st day of work on it). I actually got to see Neal getting arrested and Peter arriving and flashing his badge. It was pretty cool.
