Neither man sold what was most precious to them, they never really sold themselves. What they sold was a product, a fantasy, an entertainment and nothing more.
I got the impression that most of their clientele accepted that and treated them decently, clients paying for a specialized service. Adler was unique in that he was the only client who got off on degradation of the very thing he wanted the most.
I also loved all the Star Trek references.
