I've done it.

After nearly five years of cross-posting from Dreamwidth, I've finally disabled comments on LiveJournal.

I don't expect to ever delete my LJ account, there are too many comms that need to stay there for archival purposes. But I don't want to remain active there, and one of the easiest ways to put an end to that habit is to stop accepting comments on my journal.

ETA: Am trying to update the little note at the end of the post to direct LJ readers back here. Hope it works. And let's try this again.

I hear you. The admin for the numb3rs-fic com on lj deleted their account and the fandom lost thousands of works.

I used to follow the comm of an on :(. Maybe we can consider taking a backup of the comm (WhiteCollarfic, whitecollarhc) when the queues have reduced.

Yeah, while I don't think the owner and mod of the whitecollarfic comm is still around, I've been talking to angelita26 about backing up the H/C comm... the problem right now is that I can't create a mirror comm here on DW, I've been trying for days and all I'm getting is the 503 service unavailable error... so like you said, we have to wait until things slow down a bit :P

I just found out that you have 30 days to un-delete an account on LJ. If you can reach out to that (former) mod, maybe they'll undelete and transfer ownership and redelete.

The thought of losing so much fannish history is horrifying.

I hadn't even considered this option! I was thinking that the next step would need to be no longer cross-posting, but now I see how this could be a better middle ground in the process of moving to DW. I'm going to think about this. Thanks, Elr!

It's really time for me. I've been using DW to post almost exclusively for years. The only thing that stopped me from completely cutting the cord is the inability to post scheduled entries. But using a combination of email posting and timing the emails, I should be able to overcome that deficiency.

Congrats?? ;-) I may get to that point sometime, but for now... I don't post often enough to bother just yet. But maybe sometime... depending on how things go with TPTB over there! :-P

ETA: And I agree with lq_traintracks: this seems like a reallllly good intermediate step in the path to changing over!

I think as more and more people turn off the LJ option, DW will become the default - rather than a second choice. Or so I hope.

I agree. The more I use DW, the better I like the gist of it, even if there are a few teeny things I can't quite figure out yet. *shrugs* Oh well... I'll either find/figure them out or get used to them not being an option! LOL!!

It's teeny little things, like how my reading page looks with the icons on the right (even though I've clicked the setting to put them on the left), and LJ has an option where I'd see links to comment responses on the right side bar of my friends' page (that's fairly new; maybe within the last year or so?), and I can't find anything similar on DW. Those things may be partly related to my awesome layout that Kanarek made and set up for me (b/c I'm semi-hopeless on such things unless I have step-by-step instructions on coding, etc.), and I can totally live without them, but it's just little tweaks like that that would make it "feel" more like I'm used to. Some of it's likely just me getting used to how they are on DW vs on LJ, and I can live with that, too ;-)

Oh, that's easy enough to fix! You need to set up Flexible Squares in DW. Here are the instructions: https://parapsychic.dreamwidth.org/740.html

And don't use the file that's attached to that page, use the one here.

When you go to customize your layout on DW, you'll select Custom Layers - Flexible Squares. And then you can copy/paste your CSS layout from LJ to DW. You'll never know the difference.

I often think of taking this step, but I get so few people comment anyway, I'm afraid if I make it even a tiny bit harder, I'll lose the few that I do have. How desperate and pathetic is that?!?!
