Overview
As usual, for 2015, I have included stories published on my journal from January 1, 2014 until December 31, 2015. It includes stories that were works in progress/unpublished in 2014 and published in 2015, and doesn’t include any comment fic or other works that were not published as standalones on my journal, or any unpublished works in progress, or any completed but unpublished works.
Ruminations
I'm a little disappointed with my overall word count this year – it's the lowest I've produced since 2010, which wasn't really a full year of writing. Work has ramped up in ways that I didn't expect or even think possible, often leaving me without time or energy for writing. I also committed myself to several big writing projects that required a lot of focus. Very often, in the past, I would work on a story for a while, then toss off a few smaller fics, but this year, I was like a steam train and wouldn't allow myself to be distracted.
I think that paid off, because I think that this was the year I produced some of my best work.
The Year End Meme Questions…
And now to answer the questions that everyone asks themselves…
1. Favorite. This is always such a hard question to answer, because I to tend to love what I write, but I think my favorite has to be If Nothing is Given, Then Nothing is Required. Written for the revitalized "Run The Con" challenge, I was given the prompt "In a Bathtub" but I didn't want to write more bathing porn. I then remembered something from the 2010 Webcast, when Tim and Matt were discussing some of the unique dynamics between Peter and Neal, and Tim mentioned Neal coming over and helping him bathe Satchmo. This gave me an opportunity to take things back – waaaay back – to early season one, when the trust dynamics were real, not manufactured. Even back then, Peter cared about Neal and wanted to do everything to make sure he wasn't going to wind up back in prison.
2. Best. Hands down, Torch Song. I felt I tackled a very difficult subject in a respectful and honest way. I also love this version of Peter and Neal.
3. Most Fun. Can't pick just one – actually, can't even limit myself to two or three. It's actually a tie between the Were Creatures series and the Cute War stories.
4. Most Underappreciated. The aforementioned Torch Song. I think the idea of a cross-dressing Neal (which was a very small part of the overall story) but too many people off.
5. Sexiest. Once again, I'm really veering away from the smut. I did write a handful (plus one) of MCU ficlets for MMOM, but otherwise, nothing really porny.
6. Holy Crap, That’s Wrong Even for You. Hmmm, not a lot of extreme fic this year, either. So maybe Out of Proportion ?
7. Hardest to Write. I finished Return and Rebuild The Desolate Places, a feat I'd despaired would never happen. It became the longest single continuous narrative I've ever written – topping out at 90k. But I'm not proud of it because of the length – I am proud of the way this story developed, how it maintained a coherent and consistent story, even though it took well over a year to write, and how – ultimately – it followed to plan I had for the tale when I first started writing it. Something that would have been impossible without
sinfulslasher, who kept me going when all hope seemed lost and provided invaluable insight, advice and criticism.
8. Biggest Disappointment. Bailing on one of my White Collar Reverse Big Bang commitments this year. There's 10k of a story that I want to finish, but I can't seem to find the mojo for it.
9. Biggest Surprise. Salva Me.
kanarek13 is evil and wonderful and talented beyond words. Seriously, I could just write for her artwork for the rest of my life. But this one hit me harder than anything. It was also one of those stories that I just couldn't STOP writing – it ate my brain and almost derailed my Big Bang.
10. Riskiest. That would have to be aforementioned Torch Song. The whole story was about risk – Neal in a cross-dressing situation, transgender characters, an unfamiliar A/U. I think it's one of my best works to date/
Looking Forward…
Any Story You’d Like to Rewrite: Nope – I am pretty happy with everything I’ve written this year.
How Will New Canon Change Your Writing: Sad to say (oh, is it so sad to say) but there's no new canon, unless I move into another fandom.
Goals for2013 2014 2015: This pretty much verbatim from the past few year's.
I’ve got four big stories I know I want to write:
1 – White Collar/Pern Crossover
2 – Complete the SPQR ‘verse
3 – Complete Vampire World – Blood of Helios
4 – Write the music box/George Devore and the boiler room case stories (from Something We Never Dreamt We Could Have) in the Wonder(ful) Years ‘verse.
5 - The conclusion to the Vet Neal cycle.
And that’s the 2015 Year in Review.
Acknowledgements, most heartfelt
As I wrote last year, and it is still very true, none of this writing would have happened without the unconditional love and endless patience of my dearest friends,
theatregirl7299,
miri_thompson, and of course the wonderful, wonderful, wonderful ladies of the
wcwu, who are always there to listen to me, help me plot, chat and just be friends.
But most of all, I couldn't have gotten anything out without the unwavering support of my beta reader
sinfulslasher. I said it earlier, but it bears repeating - she kept me going when all hope seemed lost and provided invaluable insight, advice and criticism.
I also need to give a huge hug and a heartfelt thank you to my very dear and talented friend,
kanarek13. She’s illustrated so many of my stories – some without me even asking and has inspired so much of my writing. As I said above, I could happily write stories for every bit of White Collar art she creates. She’s also provided high quality screencaps that I’ve often used in my own artwork – a very generous gift to the fandom.
And to everyone who reads my stories, thank you, thank you and thank you again – my appreciation for you is boundless. I haven't been so good at responding to feedback as I want to be, but please know that I cherish every kind thought and word you leave for me.
For those of you who made it all the way through, my boys having fun:
