“How does this taste?” El held out a spoon with a few drops of fragrant golden liquid. “Be careful - it’s hot.”

Neal took the spoon and sipped carefully. It was delicious and he closed his eyes as good childhood memories cascaded through him. “El - I think this is the best you’ve ever made. You’ve clearly outdone yourself this time.”

Elizabeth smiled. “Thank you, sweetie. It’s my grandmother’s recipe.”

“What’s your secret?”

El handed him a yellow canister.

“Kosher chicken soup mix?” Neal was appalled.

“Yup - my grandmother swore by it, and so do I.”

To say he was a little put out was an understatement. “That’s cheating, El!”

She shrugged. “That may be - but even the best restaurants use stuff like this. Only they have fancy names for it like ‘kitchen bouquet’ or ‘chicken base’.”

“But… but …” Neal sputtered. “Chicken soup is supposed to be from the soul, not from …” He read off a few multisyllabic ingredients.

Peter came in and Neal, outraged, held out the yellow canister. “Peter - your wife cheats at chicken soup!”

He chuckled. “She cheats at checkers and Clue, too. You gonna break up with us because of that?”

Neal looked from husband to wife to the pot boiling on the stove. The soup was delicious. He kissed Peter, gave El a speaking look and brushed the steam-wisped curls off her forehead.

“I suppose you make your matzoh balls from a box mix too.”

I love a good P/E/N where someone cooks for the three of them! There's something so beautifully comfortable about it. Bonus that there's an argument! Heart-warming, sweet, and wonderful.

(Quick editing note: You go from present tense to past. Not a huge deal, since, if you did want to switch to one or the other, it's really short!)

At least you didn't go on for 2,000 words like I sometimes have done. Double D'OH!

So you have spoilers for s4 I take it? Email me?? *rubs hands together*

Cooking fluff is always such a happy-making thing in fic, and this is exactly why. Lovely!

Yay! I believe soup-fic is quickly becoming a favorite subgenre. As I've mentioned previously, I use the same cheat, having learned it from my mother.

Matzah balls, however, are made from scratch, from the recipe on the Streit's matzah meal box.

AWWWW! This heartwarming and smile-inducing even for a vegetarian like me! I love Neal's shock and outrage at El's 'cheating' and Peter's winking response.

(And come on, matzoh balls from a box mix aren't the end of the world, Neal! Even at Pesach . . .)

Love it! Reminds me of a story: my mom was at a hotel in the south of France and was under the weather, so she asked room service if they could provide chicken soup even though it wasn't on the menu. She was thinking they'd use something like your soup base, or even maybe open a can. No, they made it from scratch and it took hours. She was almost well again by the time it arrived. Best chicken soup she'd ever tasted, she always says.

My Mom used to make homemade spaghetti sauce, until she discovered one day that neither my Dad or me, as little kid, couldn't tell the diffence.

My DH loves "mashies". I sprung my secret weapon on him one day, OreIda Mashed Potatoes (the frozen one, no longer made!). No more peeling and boiling potatoes, and he loves me. Totally suprised when he found out, but worth every moment!

:-) Sounds yummy to me! All that matters is that it's made with love, right?

You can't make matzoh balls from a mix. That's just wrong. Even this half breed Mexican can do matzoh balls properly.
