“How does this taste?” El held out a spoon with a few drops of fragrant golden liquid. “Be careful - it’s hot.”
Neal took the spoon and sipped carefully. It was delicious and he closed his eyes as good childhood memories cascaded through him. “El - I think this is the best you’ve ever made. You’ve clearly outdone yourself this time.”
Elizabeth smiled. “Thank you, sweetie. It’s my grandmother’s recipe.”
“What’s your secret?”
El handed him a yellow canister.
“Kosher chicken soup mix?” Neal was appalled.
“Yup - my grandmother swore by it, and so do I.”
To say he was a little put out was an understatement. “That’s cheating, El!”
She shrugged. “That may be - but even the best restaurants use stuff like this. Only they have fancy names for it like ‘kitchen bouquet’ or ‘chicken base’.”
“But… but …” Neal sputtered. “Chicken soup is supposed to be from the soul, not from …” He read off a few multisyllabic ingredients.
Peter came in and Neal, outraged, held out the yellow canister. “Peter - your wife cheats at chicken soup!”
He chuckled. “She cheats at checkers and Clue, too. You gonna break up with us because of that?”
Neal looked from husband to wife to the pot boiling on the stove. The soup was delicious. He kissed Peter, gave El a speaking look and brushed the steam-wisped curls off her forehead.
“I suppose you make your matzoh balls from a box mix too.”

Date: 2012-06-04 07:39 pm (UTC)(Quick editing note: You go from present tense to past. Not a huge deal, since, if you did want to switch to one or the other, it's really short!)

Date: 2012-06-04 07:43 pm (UTC)And thank you for pointing out the switch in tenses - I had meant to fix that before posting. D'oh!

And if anyone's counting, this is actually the fourth story I've written where someone makes soup.
It's becoming a THING.

Date: 2012-06-05 12:39 am (UTC)As my mother used to say, the chickens simply aren't the same.
And as for the matzoh ball mix, it makes life A LOT EASIER. And they are delicious.
Thank you so much for your lovely f/b.

Date: 2012-06-07 04:41 pm (UTC)Yes - I've seen "chickenless" chicken soup mix. But El was actually augmenting her soup - there were real, formerly live chickens in the pot.
