It seems that I’m in a rather tetchy mood tonight. My elbow is killing me - arthritis anyone (Hell, I’m too young for that) - and it seemed to have affected my mood earlier tonight. In my usual ramp-up conversation with [livejournal.com profile] jrosemary (of White Collar Fixation fame) before the episode, I was pretty damn down on this episode.

I think my expectations were based on the closing scene in Honor Among Thieves, where Elizabeth asks Peter if he thinks Neal’s been running a long con on him. As [livejournal.com profile] rabidchild67 noted in her Rabid Squee for that episode, it smacked of sloppy writing and poor character development. I was afraid we were in for a full episode of misplaced mistrust and Season 2 and Season 3 bad behavior.

I was wrong.

There was so much that made me happy about this episode, I barely know where to start.

1. We aren’t left hanging for another four seasons about Neal’s real name. It’s Bennett. Neal Bennett. And I’m thinking that at some point, Neal actually had his name legally changed to Caffrey. Of course, I’m reminded of Neal’s comments in On Guard where he tosses his id folder on the table, ostensibly bidding farewell to “Neal Caffrey, my finest creation.”

2. Mozzie telling Neal that he need to trust Peter. “You realize somewhere that pigs are flying now.” “And that is the sound of Hell freezing over.” What a nice change from Mozzie actively working against Peter. And throughout the episode, shades of references to one of the greatest Peter-Mozzie scenes ever - the scavenger hunt from Need to Know. “Plausible deniability, it’s worked for us before.”

And isn’t that the creepiest baby doll ever (Elizabeth’s doll in Pulling Strings wasn’t a baby doll, right) ? The only thing worse could be if it was anatomically correct. I do love Neal’s horrified expression when Moz pulls off the doll’s hand to expose a USB port.

3. Peter testifying. I’ve written fic after fic where Peter has to prep for testimony. And I’ve always felt there was a vacuum on the show about that (me, being a lawyer and all), so it pleased me to no end to see a whole episode wrapped around Peter doing his job as an agent and testifying. And I do adore Neal’s attitude towards testimony - that it’s a con, a two-man con. And that he would love to testify. That seems so very Neal - the endless enthusiasm for his enthusiasms, currently his work with the FBI.

4. The rest of the cast. I need to break this down one by one.

A. Clinton - Scared witless of the lady fixer - Landon Shepard (oy what a name), who discovered during an interview when the arrest was first made, that Clinton has over-achiever daddy-approval issues. Oh, I so want fic about that. Will someone please, please write it for me.

B. Diana - I have the sadz. It seems that there’s no going back for her and Christie. But I did think that her reaction at the end of the interrogation scene was a little over the top, or maybe well played if she was clued in by Peter.

C. Elizabeth - Oh, my dear, dear, DEAR Mrs. Burke, you are back and with a vengeance. Over the last four episodes, your role has been reduced to a minor supporting cast member, your lines have been, for the most part, about propping up your husband (in his quest to have a work-life balance and keep his torrid affair with his handsome CI under wraps). We got a glimmer of the Elizabeth of Olde when she greeted Moz last week. But this week, she’s back and better than ever. (More about this later).

D. Sara - She knocked it out of the park. Look, I know that there are fans of the show who don’t like Sara Ellis, and there are some who have conceived of a hatred of her that borders on pathological, but I challenge anyone to tell me that her role in this episode was neither well played nor organic to the story.

5. Neal risking the operation (and the outcome of the trial) to protect Mozzie. One of the major take-aways from last week was how much of a friend Neal is to Mozzie. His utter shock and near-befuddlement when faced with Shepherd’s threat to expose Moz was heartbreaking. It isn’t often that we see Neal caught with his metaphorical pants down.

6. Neal and Elizabeth Direct a Porno. It’s been four years since we’ve seen Peter Burke’s Tim DeKay’s bare chest on Prime Time (the scene from Power Play that made it onto the extras for the S2 DVDs really doesn’t count). And he’s even more gorgeous that I remember. But let’s back it up a bit. Sara and Elizabeth sitting on the couch, Neal and Peter in the kitchen arguing about who’s going to tell them about their plan. I don’t know which was funnier. I laughed and laughed and laughed - their faces - all of them. It was screwball comedy at its finest.

Not to mention Mrs. Burke looking extremely hot in that white suit, and Sara’s finally wearing something that doesn’t torture her body.

Okay, okay … enough with the wardrobe check.

So - we’ve got the romantic scene - Neal’s apartment. We’ve got the supposed lovers, Sara and Peter, we’ve got Elizabeth watching the proceedings and then there’s Neal with the camera standing outside on the balcony. Except when he’s popping in to give stage directions to the totally uncomfortable Sara and Peter, and then stuffing his face with chocolate covered strawberries. Sublimation, sublimation, sublimation… Seeing his boyfriend macking on his ex-girlfriend with his boyfriend’s wife also giving stage directions has to be highly arousing.

At this point, I’m shouting at the TV - GREATEST EPISODE EVER!!!!!!!!

7. Neal as nerd. He really does look the part as he goes to see Delaney (nice turn as a villain, Mr. Tuturro - not overplayed at all. How refreshing). And then his tour de force as an expert witness. I wanted to stand up and cheer as the ink faded just a few seconds later. (And in a moment of irony, I was watching Pawn Stars earlier this evening and someone brought in a check printing machine, referencing Frank Abagnale and “Catch Me If You Can.” Abagnale was famous for, amongst other crimes, washing checks.

And I had to love Neal deciding that he didn’t like testifying - too much telling of the truth.

8. The Fixer, Shepard. I like her - I like her agency, her attitude, her strange sort of honor. And am I the only one who thinks that she and Sara have more than a bit of a thing going on? According to her conversation with Peter at the warehouse, she knew right away that the photos were a set up. And I don’t think it’s because she’s convinced that Peter would never cheat on his wife. Can I get Sara/Shepard slash? Can anyone say Sara/Shepard slash ten times fast?

I hope she comes back. One that could take on the role that Keller played in S2 and S3 - not so much the villain of the piece, but the worthy adversary. TBH, she actually reminds me very strongly of Irene Adler from the BBC’s Sherlock. Am I off base here?

Of course, there’s something I’m not mentioning in this dish. That’s Sam.

I don’t like him.

I don’t trust him.

And right now, the whole mythology is sort of getting on my nerves.

If I don’t discuss it here on the Dish, it’s never happened, right?

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Okay, folks. I’m putting a lid on the Dish. But not before I mention the house rules.

Last week, I loved the episode, and I specifically asked that no one harsh my squee. A polite way of saying, if you didn’t like it, please be considerate and don’t tell me how much you hated it.

Several weeks back, when I did the Dish for S4.04, Parting Shots, I said that no bashing meant NO BASHING, and that I’d delete comments I considered bashing. And of course, people freely commented on how much they disliked Sara’s role in the episode. And I didn’t delete.

But you know what, this is my journal, and I’ve been very careful over the years about not promoting it anywhere. I am thrilled beyond measure that without any signal boosting, fans from all over the world come and park their thoughts about the show here, and hold long and joyous conversations with other fans. I don’t like the idea of deleting comments, warning people about their comments, or banning. I don’t want to flock or block anonymous commenters.

However, I don’t want strictly negative content here. The Dish isn’t meant to be an echo chamber of my own thoughts - and I very much want to hear other people’s considered and balanced opinions. But if pretty much the only thing you have to say is how much you dislike the episode, dislike a character - and let’s call it for what it is - you dislike Sara - please find other venues for your opinions.

One of the amazing things about White Collar is its incredible fan base. For years, I’ve wondered if other USA Network shows have similar fan reactions. They don’t. Check out [livejournal.com profile] usanetworknews - White Collar consistently has multiple entries - more fic, more art, more episode fan reaction posts than any other show. It’s something to be immensely proud of. Check it out tomorrow, you’ll be certain to find a place to park your thoughts if you can’t do so here.

And you should also consider heading over to White Collar Fixation, to read [livejournal.com profile] jrosemary’s “First Thoughts”. J-Ro is a Sara fan (and she has strong hopes for Sara and Neal long term), but WCF is a public blog, too. A distinction from my private journal here on DW and LJ.

I haven’t really gotten around to responding to people’s comments from last week - and I will try to. Identity Crisis is one of my favorite eps of the season and I want to talk about it, too. I just haven’t had a lot of time (RL is killing me, and my White Collar big bang fic is due soon). This means that I’ll probably be a little delayed in responding to this week’s dish, unless there are problems.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Okay, enough with the rules and editorial comments. You know the drill. Thinky thoughts, not-so-thinky thoughts. Squee and reasoned commentary are welcome. Negativity and bashing will result in an unhappy Elr.

And you won’t like me when I’m unhappy.

Elizabeth - OMG! Standing there in her amazing suit directing her husband's clinch with another woman. It was easily the funniest scene this season.

Except for the Sam parts, I loved this!

It was so hard to control my laughter, as my roommate was sleeping in the next room...

That scene when Neal comments that 'testifying is a two-man con', Peter's face was so funny. And the 'porno' scene! Everyone was great!!

My most liked episode of this season...

As I'm sure you can imagine, I was a squeeing, flailing mess during the second half of this episode. The scene at the Burke's, there were moments in that where I was like, "I think I've written something very similar to this". And it was even better because it was happening on my screen. The look on Sara's face when she figured out what Neal and Peter were proposing was PRICELESS.

I feel like for telling Peter and Sara to act a little drunk, I think NEAL was a little drunk. I loved it when he's just shouting things at them from the other side of the door. And it does make one wonder what thing it is that Sara does with her leg, that she apparently didn't want Neal to bring up in that moment, lol. And El was, of course, amazing. It took about three second of Peter/Sara awkward of her to be like, "Oh, these poor people need my help." Peter and Sara: not very good at winging it.

Hil.ar.ious.

It's good to see some more of Tim's amazing body. Nom, nom, nom, nom.

Awkward aside, that scene needs about twenty post-scene fics where foursome sexytimes happens. It doesn't have to be foursome, it could be like... I don't know. It could be very inspiring. Twenty, minimum. More is okay. I will accept more. Don't worry, I'll help write them.

I LOVED Shepard, and I totally agree on Sara/Shepard. All that loyalty, and being impressed that Peter could get Sara to turn on her, couldn't have just come from working together a lot. Oh, and her crazy name, I think comes from the fact that she was written as either a male or female character. The name would have been less weird on a man, but the part was definitely perfect for a woman.

I agree, she'd be great as a come back on the show. She'd be a fantastic frenemy for Neal.

There was another plot? There was other stuff going besides Sara and Peter being shirtless? I had no idea.

Totally random highlight for me: the noise that Neal made when Mozzie pulled the hand off the baby. It was this combination of surprise and disgust.

Loved the hi-tech baby - especially the glasses. I like silly, and the photo session was silly par excellence! Neal and Elizabeth 'directing' was a riot. Really enjoyable episode.

I love this episode! :)

The relationship between Neal and Peter rang so true here. Unlike in Honor Among Thieves, their motivation, their reasons were very clear, and their love for each other shined despite their differences.

“I stand corrected. It’s a two-men con.” Peter getting exited over his testimony… The “you tell them” moments, making the photographs… I laughed so hard at during this episode :D But it was cute as well :)

Neal blew the job to protect Mozzie – I felt for him in his moment of desperation. Indeed, Shepard caught him with his pants down. I love the Neal/Mozzie friendship just as much as the Peter/Neal… whatever they have.

I enjoyed Sara in this. Her role was important, but not overplayed, and her presence on the case made sense. I second the request for Sara/Shepard porn!

THE PHOTOS!!! :D I have no words. Or maybe, I half expected Mozzie to show up. But then the screens would probably burst and the episode would be over.

The high tech baby :D I lost it with the drill.

Shepard was a great adversary, and the bad guy was a believable bad guy. I really liked Shepard. Can we get more of her?

I loved when Neal explained how being a master forger also makes him a master chemist in some “special” areas of knowledge :) And when that check wouldn’t wash… of course, you know it HAS to work, because Peter and Neal can’t lose a case this way (and Neal wouldn’t make a mistake like that) – but it was a moment of curious dread and amusement on Neal and Peter’s account.

El is back in her glory!!! You don’t know how much I missed you!

I don’t know what to make of Sam. First, he doesn’t trust Neal. Then Neal finds him, tells him again he wants in, and suddenly Sam agrees to it? Hmm. … I can see him being genuine. I can also imagine him as a big evil bastard. I don’t get good vibes from him, but with guy who has been undercover for so long, who has possibly worked among various kind of scum and lived in paranoia for 30 years, I guess that’s to be expected. Still, even if he is a “good” guy, I wonder what kinds of lines he wouldn’t mind breaking. I’m reserving my judgment for now.

And there are countless other things to squee about.

Not sure if it beats Diminishing Returns in my mind (and last Mozzie’s episode was so specific that it should have its own scale) but it was a very strong, solid episode that I enjoyed immensely :)

Finally, finally I agree with everything you said in the dish. Been dying to say this since the beginning. It’s good to no longer be in the minority.

I LOVED this episode!!!

Reading the dish, I found out even more things I liked. Thank you for listing them because now I can go back and watch the episode again and try to spot them. I would also do it for my favorite scenes, like the one with Mozzie showing up with the fake baby doll. Was I the only one who thought about The Hangover movie? His appearance alone made me laugh out loud and it’s been a very long time since I laughed out loud at TV.

And it didn’t end there. They kept piling the goodies on. The scene where Mozzie was going over the phone records and naming them was priceless. “Limo service, limo service, controller, controller, Giuliani!” Where can you get dialogue that good? Then they topped it with Peter’s “Where did you come from?” and Mozzie’s masterful reply. They really did Mozzie justice this episode. He was one of the best things about it. And that wasn’t even the funniest scene.

The best, funnies, most delightful scene of course was the porn shoot. The combination of Peter and Neal telling Sara and El about their plan and the four of them executing that plan.

Now about Sara, you may not have noticed but I didn’t post a comment on your Parting Shots review. That was me respecting your wish about a character you liked, because, yes, I’m one of those people who doesn’t like Sara. Although I believe I have completely legitimate reasons for not liking the way she was written so far, and wasn’t looking forward to seeing her in this episode, I was delightfully surprised. Hillarie proved that she’s a capable actress if she’s handed good material and the material they gave her this episode was damn good for a change. It was relevant and interesting and didn’t feel shoehorned into the plot just to have her there. Here’s my request to the writers: write more awesome Sara like this. Believe me, if you do, all of us nay-Sayers will turn around and embrace her.

The rest you pretty much covered. I liked the idea of Shepard. My only tiny criticism was that the actress didn’t have the full arsenal to carry the role. At times I could hear her speaking the script. And I’m absolutely with you on Sam. Don’t like him; don't understand him. I’m also tired of how they’re dragging the mythology. At the end, when they showed Neal being photographed through a lens I thought it would reveal something about the villain. But it was only Peter, which meant more fuel for distrust between him and Neal. Something else I'm tired of.

To wrap it up, all the props to the writer of this episode. This person managed to write a compelling story and make every character shine in it as their true selves. It included a lot of interaction between characters we love, Neal and Peter, Mozzie and Neal, Mozzie and Peter, Peter and El, the list goes on. That’s the main reason a lot of us watch the show. To watch these people interact. And when they do it well AND manage to tell a compelling story (and get some laughs out of us) it makes for real good television.

Well, if they plan to make Sara acceptable as love interest for Neal after all - nope, that one is through for me. No chance of recovery. But if they keep it to time to time guest appearances which actually make sense to the plot, I don't mind. I wouldn't go so far to say that I'll feel delighted, though. But as long as it doesn't ruin my fun, why complain about other viewers getting some happiness out of it?

I didn't mind Sara this time around...my main problem with her character is that she normally feels useless and shoehorned in, plus takes away way too much screentime, but this was one of the few epsiodes (along with judgment day) where her involvment made sense and she did get exactly as much screentime as necessary.

In fact the only thing which pushed my annoyance button hard was the solution...I don't get why Shephart was all "I knew Sara Ellis tried to trap me, but I respect her, so I didn't mind." But, I guess, everyone on this show is required to like Sara Ellis.

That and El slapping Peter's butt again - I hate it when she does it.

But Mozzie was fun, especially the enigma and paradoxon line. Neal being all giddy about testifying was great (and, let's face it, we all wanted to see him on the stant - too bad that we didn't see the defense trying to rip his testimony apart). Neal's reason for again keeping things from Peter is believable, and I really liked that Peter was called upon sitting on his high horse while other people do the dirty work for him.

All in all, fun, fun, fun...enough fun to overlook some plot holes (why is Shephart watching Mozzie if she doesn't know who Neal is?) I liked dimishing returns better, though.

The photo shoot was one of my favorite White Collar scenes ever. It played out wonderfully right from the start where Neal pitched the idea to Peter and then the two boys trying to sell it to El and Sara – absolutely brilliant. Then El and Neal directing the photo shoot – the whole time I kept thinking that I read a fanfiction story similar to this scene. The actors all seemed to have fun with it making it a lot of fun for the rest of us to watch. And shirtless Peter was a bonus!

Then after the show I read the following tweets Jeff Eastin posted during the broadcast:

“All you /'s and shippers have fun with the photo shoot scene.#WhiteCollar/”

“ Many of Bomer & @TAThiessen's lines in photo shoot were ad-libbed brilliantly”

These two tweets made me love the show even more – I love how they find small ways to acknowledge their fan base.

The whole episode was full of fun details – Mozzie’s creepy baby and Neal’s reaction to it, Mozzie and Peter working together, Neal’s testimony, and Mozzie being the voice of reason telling Neal to involve Peter.

This episode was so much win that I can hardly wait for next week!

Ad-libbed - does it mean that Matt and Tiffany said lines that weren't in the script? If that's the case...AMAZING!!!! ♥♥♥

Oh yeah, my first reaction was, "I want to have the next ep right now please!" It's so addicting after such a great ep.

Elr, I don't know how you do it every week to write such wonderful dishes! When I watch White Collar I think, oh that scene I'm going to write about in the comment of Elr's dish later but when I sit at my PC almost nothing comes up.

So I'm reading your dish and my head is bopping up and down at every line you wrote because I can only concur!

THIS ep had so much stuff we didn't get in all the other eps before:

1. Peter at court - Priceless how he felt devastated when that Josh guy did the asking completely against their exercise.

2. Neal at court - Loved him! Although he said afterwards he doesn't like it so much because it's all about telling the truth, he was so present and kind of arrogant, he did the chemical show so easily and was only a little worried when the seconds ticked and nothing happened. But then it worked and you could see the relieve in his eyes. Well played by Matt Bomer, he always make me swoon with his facial expressions.

3. The "Sex" scene - LOL, that was by far the best scene of whole WC for me. Beginning with Peter and Neal discussing who is the one telling Elizabeth. I laughed so hard... And then both in front of the girls - priceless! I can only say that it is always a pleasure to see Tim playing those scenes. He is the best husband ever! Already in the ep with the Haustenberg when he was in that hotel room with two girls you could see his uneasyness. Or in ep 2x2 when he linked into that website with El on the phone... I think everyone enjoyed those four in that scene, and I'm sure Neal was more than aroused because after he finished his last shot and came back into the room he had to drink a huge swig of the champagne!!!! LOL (Perhaps he needed a cold shower far more *hehe*) ♥

4. Mozzie and "the baby". LOL, what was that? It was funny and I'm always amazed by the stuff they come up with. Neal's reaction when Mozzie pulled the little arm... As I said, Matt Bomer's facial expressions...

5. You know I'm a Sara shipper and I am thankful for every ep she is in. It doesn't have to be as Neal's girlfriend, I think they are done with it, too much happened, but as an asset for those intriguing cases I love her. And I like her friendship with Peter and Neal, they are good together, always have been. I think Sara knows how much Peter and Neal depend on each other and she would do anything to be a part in their scheming :D.

6. Now something I didn't like: Sam! I like Treat Williams, but I don't like Sam. I don't know what to think of him. I mean, there is a young man who is the only link to Ellen and wants to know what and who caused her death, why is Sam so bloody hostile? I don't get it and really, I don't care.

7. I didn't get the situation with that Shepard woman having something about Mozzie that led to Neal having to crash the observation. What was that? Can anyone explain it to me? Thanks!!!!

Now a few fanfic prompts: Neal being jealous because Peter touched Josh's shoulder like he only did with Neal. He never touched Jones that way, never Diana, no one. And then there comes that stupid guy and takes Neal's place. How dare he! ;)

Of course that photoshooting at Neal's apartment has potential, right? *big grin* Neal being aroused afterwards has to bring up some ideas!

That's a wrap!

Bye bye from Germany! XOXO

I'm still so overwhelmed by the sheer awesomeness of this episode that I can't be fully coherent about it, so let me begin by restating my initial thought on this one: I love this episode so much I want to bed it and have its bastard children.

This may very well be my all-time favorite White Collar ep. I don't think I've ever laughed that hard, that often, at any other episode.

The dialogue was *spot-on*. There was an abundance of facial expressions in this one that were absolutely priceless. I found the case of the week compelling, I loved the twists and the cons and the cat and mouse that just didn't let up from start to finish, and I thought all of the supporting characters were well done. Landon Shepard is a great character, and I very much hope we see her again. (Anybody else remember Perrey Reeves from the vampire-fetish episode of X-Files?)

I don't trust Sam, but I find the character interesting. I can't say yet if I like him or not, but the role is entertaining and Treat williams inhabits it well. I honestly can't get enough of a read on the guy to predict if he's going to end up being a good guy or a villain, and I'm not sure I can remember the last time a new character on WC managed to do that. He's definitely got my attention. I think Peter is wise to keep a close eye on that situation; Neal tends to lose all caution and common sense when he's chasing down answers to something personal (as evidenced by the fact that when an unfamiliar SUV pulls up to him and the driver says "Get in the car," he gets in the car.)

I was so happy with Elizabeth in this episode. So, so , so happy. *That's* the personality I've been missing. Dear God, she was funny.

I agree with you about the nature of the tension and the clarity of motivations between Neal and Peter in this one. Both sides were clear, understandable, and true to the characters. I loved their dicey moments as much as the rest of their interaction.

Sara. God, how I love that woman. I don't even know where to begin. Her WTF face at Neal when they were discussing the setup was one of the many expressions of the night I'd love to have a screencap of.

That effing creepy doll had me rolling. As if the Go Go Gadget Cyborg aspect wasn't enough, what the HELL was with the expression on that thing's face? Who makes a baby doll with that face? When Mozzie came in with that thing strapped to his chest, I thought I was gonna choke. And then he had it in the diaper bag...Jesus. I can't decide whether Neal's reaction when Mozzie pulled off the hand or Peter's reaction when he saw it in the bag wins.

The photoshoot was brilliance. Pure, unadulterated brilliance. I'm giggling my ass off just remembering it. (Also, Hilarie Burton, you lucky bitch: first you get a season up close and personal with Matt Bomer, now you get to wrap your legs around Tim DeKay.)

Fabulous episode.

Except for some issues here and there with the season, this has got to be one of the best WC season ever. This episode was full of \o/. I cannot even tell you how much I laughed at the seduction scene or the one previous to that where the boys had to tell their gals about their plan. Heehee

My thoughts - good stuff overall. I loved Mozzie in this episode - so very Mozzie but also a GOOD friend to Neal. He is trying to protect Neal with the whole Sam thing.

I'm not a I gotta have barechested Peter fan -but it was nice to balance out the season with the barechested Neals and --- how he got there - Yay! Sara!!

I missed that about Clinton, but maybe that was because I was looking at MB's hair. His hair this season has been spectacular (okay I have a hair kink) - so I spend a lot of time making dreamy eyes at his hair.

Shepard was okay to me, I really wasn't hot on how the actress delivered her lines. I thought there was a lack of inflection, but maybe it wasn't so bad but the rest of them were so animated. I didn't get the Irene Adler vibe, but that actress was so superb in her role, I kind of hold her up with high regard - so maybe they were trying for that?

At one point, and I swear I will have to watch it again - but no time yet, Peter and Neal are standing outside and MB keeps looking to the side - and I swear to God he was being prompted with his lines. Or maybe someone was yanking his chain or something. I have no idea but it was distracting. Yet the hair always distracts me so - not so much that it was a problem.

Someone has to write the porn that takes place DIRECTLY after the photo shoot. Because you know there has to be porn right then -- A foursome of porn. And thank you for telling me it was a strawberry - I couldn't figure it out. And really Neal has to be crazy hot after that - he needs to attack his spouses and his ex- right away.

And \o/ Neal faked being a scientist for 2 weeks! I love it! The little scientist in my heart danced around. And Abagnale and check washing - yes one of the places I learned about that little trick.

And one other thing - \o/ for setting your rules! Really your journal, your decision. Way back when at some point (before I knew you) I posted something on your journal about a spoiler. You deleted and exaplained why. I took no offense because it is YOUR journal. You get to do with it as you please. But thanks for placing a nice Dish here. I haven't found one as welcoming as yours anywhere on the web.

Last night's episode was my favorite of the season and in my top ten favorite episodes from all four seasons so far. I loved everything about it. Between the court room scenes and the photoshoot (which made me laugh so hard that my mom had to ask me what was wrong lol), I very much enjoyed this episode!

There was so much to adore in this ep, but in my mind you can never go wrong when the ep includes lots of shirtless Peter. :-) (Shallow? Me?)

But just all of it -- the two-man con aspects of testimony, the photo shoot, Mozzie encouraging Neal to share information with Peter, it was just so wonderful. I'm neutral on Sara in general, but she really felt part of the show in this ep. And Neal-in-Glasses is a fun extra bonus (again with the shallow...I'm sorry).

Not based on anything in reality or anything, but I was wondering over the past couple of episodes with the diminished role of El if perhaps Tiffani Thiessen is pregnant again. But seeing her in that suit in this ep makes me think not. Though I could be wrong.

Okay, this episode is made of pure gold win \o/ I honestly don't know where to begin :P Let me start with saying that once again I completely agree with everything you've said in your dish :D We love the same parts, we feel meh about the same parts.

In each episode I always pay attention to the quality of the view on-screen and I must say Neal was once again very pretteh - must be the Mac :P But Peter was gorgeous as well. It must still be the island zing, ever since they came back from the island, they both look different, there is something about them I can't quite put my finger on but I love it ♥ I'd like to think that it's partially because Peter has finally put into words and actions some of the feelings he has for Neal - I miss him, I want him here, I won't be able to live without him, I choose him over my career - that must have been cathartic in a way, to finally admit it and then do for Neal the things he did :D And Neal is definitely aware of how much he owes Peter and he is grateful. So we have lovely smiles and eye-fucking and secret glances, they are glowing and there are sparks flying even when they are arguing - it's all so ♥ ♥ ♥ and definitely helps me cope with any stressful and angsty plot twists :D

I'm still not totally on board with Neal and Moz handling things on their own. Even Moz is aware that Neal is so focused on uncovering the truth that he won't see the dagger coming until it's burried in his back. The Sam plot is kinda meh for now, there is nothing fascinating about it and I see it as a constant threat to the bromance and an excuse to make Neal act like the two years of working for Peter hadn't taught him anything. The boys want to protect each other and they may have the same goal, but they definitely have a different vision of working on this case and sooner or later the Sam-triggered bomb is gonna explode... and we'll be back to picking up the pieces.

But, for now, there are far more interesting things going on so I will gladly join you in the "never happened" aisle :P

And move to the porn - in WC world this was the equivalent of hardcore, yes? :D I love that Peter/Sara scene soooooooo much, this was absolutely brilliant, the acting, the ad-libs, the chemistry between Tim and Hilaire, the insanity of this whole idea - do they give baby Oscars for scenes? ♥flails♥ I was totally waiting for El to push Sara aside and show her how it's done with Peter... and then help her re-create it move by move - LOL!

And that chocolate strawberry and the line that went with it - that was 100% Matt and I love him for that (and oh so many more things :P)

I also have to say that the screencaps for that scene are hot and beautiful. I'm absolutely stunned by how wonderful Peter and Sara look together, despite the awkwardness. Absolutely amazing - I was able to notice this despite the distracting naked chest and biceps and all :D \o/

Also - this entire scene just begs for a sequel in any combination, Neal alone was barely standing, trying to extinguish his flame with that champaigne... and I still think El would love to show Sara how to operate Peter's buttons :P :P :P

WIN!

And Moz - LOL - our dear Moz, how do we love thee for your gadgets and wit? LOL. And this: 45 years ago an enigma gave paradox a very special hug LOL. Tales of Moz - The Origins. BTW, does that mean Moz is 45 years old?

Also, you gotta wonder, how on earth does the WC prop department come up with these creepy dolls :D

This was probably the most incoherent squeee I've produced in a while but who can blame me after this episode :P Loved it. I will never ever abandon you, show ♥

This is a first - I have to post my comment in 2 parts...LOL :D

Anyway, I just have to mention El - she rocked, loved that white outfit, made me think of a navy general commanding his (2-person) troops :D ♥

I also wanted to say again how much I enjoy the post-ep dish, it's the only place I go for squeee and episode-related comments. It is made of win ♥

And now some eye-candy :P (clickable thumbs)

#1At 18, he discovered his life, as he knew it, was created by the marshalls. It would be natural for him to look at each alias as a creation.(There are plenty of fanfic with him legally changing his name, so yea, valid)
How did Neal discovered his real last name, did Ellen tell him?
There are times I believe Mozzie extreme pscyhosis were due to Neal's absence being in prison and as the show progresses he become more "normal". He presents weird and wild ideas, but is not as "invested" in their reality, being more exposed/surrounded by Neal's presence. Or Willy Garson influence.
#2 Dolls - who on the show finds those ....dolls???
#3 Like the way Peter changes the word laces to tainted to make it sound more sinister. Didn't Oprah hire Dr Phil to help w/ her trial? This bit actually appeared like it would happen in real life, not TV fantasies.
#5 Agreed. Neal will always protect Mozzie.
#7 The nerd, reminds us Matt can act and look so different from Neal.
I liked the confidence he showed testifying and the frustration of not being able to direct/con his answers for the best results

Yea, Shepard's character is done right scarey. She is more of manipulator than the Neal the con. Her moral character seems less than his. The writers surely had fun writing her character. Good villian, and I bet we see more of her in the future.
I have mixed attitudes toward Sara. In this episode, it definitely seemed as the Neal/Sara romance is done. Now just friends. Can't quite describe what attitudes/outlooks/? I'm reading here.
Sam bits:
Neal breaking the key in car door to ID car rental and get Sam's name.
Neal texting and walking, rarely do we get to see Neal looking down, almost expected him to walk into something.
The whole issue of Neal's past is being dragged out. Much like we fans kinda got tired of the music box. Some times, you just want to clip all the little bits together and make a complete episode to eliminate the frustration.

Haven't watched this episode a second time yet, and was switching during commercials to two different baseball games Car radio - Neal vs Peter. TV - husband vs wife!! And apparently got enough sleep, cause I'm very wordy this morning.

I'm not sure I have much to add to what's already been said, but I love the post-ep dish and I want to play too. :-)

I actually had to go back and watch some bits again (I watch live but also DVR), because I was following Marsha Thomason's live tweets during the episode (and got caught up in a couple of conversations as well). And I went back and watched the photo shoot, well, just because. :-)

Great episode, in so many ways.

Let me start with the Neal/Peter dynamic (and ongoing trust issues). While I didn't dislike "Honor Among Thieves," I did feel that the bit at the end about Neal manipulating things and there maybe being a long con of some kind seemed kind of tacked on and didn't really make sense in the context of the episode. (No, Peter didn't see Neal turning Abigail down repeatedly or making clear to Mozzie that he didn't like going behind Peter's back, but even without that knowledge the plot didn't make sense as a "long con.") On the other hand, in "Compromising Positions" the tension between Peter and Neal felt much more organic, both from a character and a plot perspective. There *has* been growth in their relationship, and it seems that Neal genuinely wants to bring Peter in on things. And Peter seems more understanding of where Neal is coming from, and unlike during the whole thing with Fowler, he listens to what Neal is saying about the possibility of whoever is responsible having FBI connections/access and doesn't dismiss it. Unfortunately, Sam wants nothing to do with anyone in the FBI and Peter is still too close to having been on really shaky ground with the bureau.

And now, some of the fun stuff:

"Testifying is a con." :-) And Neal getting shot down when he offers to testify, but then getting his chance in the end. And the lawyer asking how being a fake scientist qualifies Neal to be able to testify about the benzene. And it's not, it's being an actual forger.

Creepy baby is creepy. Jeff Eastin tweeted that they gave the other arm a corkscrew but weren't able to work it into the episode. Matt Negrete (the writer of the ep) said we haven't seen the last of the baby.

Mozzie actually suggesting that Neal bring Peter in on the whole Sam thing - he's wary of Sam (and really, what *do* they know about him)(though I give Neal a bit of a pass since Ellen told him to trust Sam with her dying breath). He is trying to watch out for Neal. And then Neal protecting Mozzie and risking the operation, the trial, and Peter's wrath. Come to think of it, all the relationship and character interaction moments in this episode were pretty terrific.

And yes, the photo shoot. I was literally LOL'ing through pretty much the whole thing. I especially loved how ridiculous Peter looked at the very beginning. And then El...Peter asks if she wants to leave, but no, she wants to direct the action and make sure Peter comes off as the Peter she knows.

Oh, and the earlier scene where Sara is calling Shepard and afterward she says she's not an "incriminating photo" person, and Neal starts to say something, and she's all, "I thought I was hitting speed dial." Interesting....

I know there's more, but I'll stop there for now - must get back to work.

Elr - hope the elbow is doing better. And thanks for continuing to do the dish, it's always my first stop for episode discussion.

My apologies for last week. I hope my response fell under "reasoned commentary" and not under squee harshing. I often wish that we in fandom would not "yuck other people's yum" so often, but it can be hard to remember when you find yourself annoyed by an ep. So, new fannish resolution for the future.

I was certainly not annoyed this week! What a delightful episode. I think any scene with Peter, El, Sara, and Neal (of which there are sadly so few) is likely to win me over, but that fake love scene was hysterical. And I loved Sara - I loved that she was willing to do just about anything for Peter, I loved the mild awkwardness between her and Neal ("I thought I was hitting speed dial!"), and I loved the extreme awkwardness of her and Peter. I'm hoping so hard that Eastin has broken Sara and Neal up to make them better friends so that eventually he will get them back together. That seems . . . unusually mature for a TV show, but I think, while Eastin often drops the ball on his long-term plots (I also am not into the current mythology), he is top notch at character relationships, platonic and otherwise.

I love your comments and agree. Don't have time read the other comments above, but! You are the second person who commented that Shephard reminded her of Irene! I really didn't think of it, but when I re-watch I will keep it in mind. :)

LOVE LOVED LOVED this episode, especially (duh) the porno scene.

I'm not anti-Sam at this point, tbh. I feel like we haven't seen enough of him.

And maybe I am completely off-base, but I wasn't clear that Neal was protecting Mozzie, per se, but making sure that Peter didn't find out what Mozzie was researching on Neal's behalf. Am I wrong about that? (Not that it can't be both.)

I am actually in your camp when as far as the Neal and Shepard interaction and whether or not he was protecting Mozzie. I think he was to an extent but he also knew that Peter would search and find out somehow that the info was linked to Neal and Sam.

Superb Dish!

The "Neal and Elizabeth direct a porno" is one of my all time favorite WC scenes--I never considered myself an OT4 fan before (Peter/Elizabeth/Neal/Sara), but this is obviously an idea I must revisit!

The whole photo-shoot scene was just too damn funny!! I was laughing so hard and at the same time, you know when you are watching a friend doing something embarrassing and you feel embarrassed for them? Yep I was watching it and feeling the same for all of them. Just brilliant scene :D

Ooooo yes, Irene Adler!! You nailed it. I was watching and couldn't really get my finger on it and then when I was reading your entry and you mention Irene, yep, she does have that vibe. I hope to see her back she could be an interesting "nemesis"/antagonist and I have a feeling that Peter will have to use that card in the near future...

Because, yep I don't trust Sam either... There's something off about him. Or maybe it's just me, or the actor playing it didn't do it right (or maybe it was supposed to make us feel that way?) Well we'll see. And I've wondered if Neal's father is still alive, Neal said his Mother said that he had died as a hero. But then I got the feeling in further episodes that he ran and no one heard of him again. I might have missed something, though.

I really loved this episode I found myself sad when it ended because it seemed shorter than usual, good things end faster when you're having a good time, right? :D

I, too, didn't comment much last time because I don't care for the character of Sara and I respect the people who do (it has nothing to do with Hilarie), but if they use Sara like this, then I'm all for her popping in every once in a while.

It isn't often that I really do laugh out loud at something and the photo shoot scene really was very funny. Shades of a 1940s screwball comedy!

ITA about Sam (and I find myself wishing Mozzie would help Neal find out about his Dad....that would be more interesting).

I loved Diana and Jones doing the "big sister and big brother" smackdown of Neal about truth telling. Those little scenes show that Neal is "one of them" because I can see Diana playing him no mind if she didn't really like him.

Wish they would announce Season 5!

I thought it was an excellent episode.

Neal risking the operation (and the outcome of the trial) to protect Mozzie.

I don't know.. I thought he was protecting himself (or Sam/Ellen). Mozzie *wants* Peter to know about that piece of paper, and Mozzie doesn't have a name to end up in any file.

And Shepard still has that hold on Neal. I wonder if they'll ever return to that.

I approached the episode with trepidation; based on the sketchy description in the TV listings, I feared it would involve the fixer going after Peter. Okay, it did, sort of, but not at all the way I expected. ::collapses in giggles::

Mozzie telling Neal that he need to trust Peter.

For this alone, I loved the episode.

Sara and Peter were adorably awkward staging the blackmail photos. I suspect that it will replace "Dr. Magic Hands" as El's favorite thing to tease Peter about. Poor Peter.

Neal was having way too much fun giving his testimony.

I hope we see more of the fixer, too. She makes a great adversary. She's amoral and ruthless, and yet, not really evil. Instead of threatening to dig up dirt on Peter, she showed "no hard feelings" by giving him her card. I like that she's not a cardboard villain.

I don't trust Sam, either, which is to say I don't trust the scriptwriters.

Is it just me, or when Neal expressed his suspicions about the timing of Ellen's murder, did anybody else think of Kramer?

Right now, I haven't even finished the episode. I have paused it around the time Sara and Peter start. Simply because I am trying to overcome the near-hysterical giggle attack. My thoughts were nearly the exact same as yours. I shall continue after I have finished the episode, but I just wanted to calm my giggles.

Hold on...

Nope. Tried to go back. Still giggling. Guess I have to take this in installments...
