Summary: Obi-Wan Kenobi has never known it, but he has always been the Force’s Champion, destined to suffer infinite sadness in defense of the Light. On his last turn on the wheel, responsibility for The Chosen One, the false child of prophecy, had been thrust upon him with no warning, and Darkness held the upper hand.
But this time, the Force has marshaled its power and will protect its Champion until the time is right, no matter how long Obi-Wan has to wait and how much he has to suffer.
Or,
Obi-Wan is reborn as a twelve-year old.
He wakes up on a slavers’ ship, with all of his prior life’s memories intact, and he’s bound for Tatooine with a Force-inhibitor collar around his neck, a bomb implanted in his spine, and no way of knowing what state of the Galaxy is in.
Just another day in the life of the Force’s Champion.
Chapter Summary: Obi-Wan tries to come to terms with the gift from the Force, and the Force gives him another gift - an uncomplicated time with Master Qui-Gon, a kinder and more compassionate man than the Master Jinn of his memories.
And back at with Naboo, Knight Skywalker has an idea that just might change the course of history…

Meta - Chapter Six - The Tranquility of a Single Hour
Thank you for all the love you’ve given this story, the outpouring of comments on the last few chapters - the guessing on where the story is heading - makes me so very happy. I’ve crossed the 154k word mark, and there are 31 chapters fully written, of which 28 are edited. That doesn’t mean things are set in stone. Last week, I inserted a whole new chapter into Section II, which I’d thought was complete, but later realized I had a few hanging threads that had to be addressed, at length.
My apologies for skipping the meta last week, I had a routine medical thing on Wednesday that left me with some odd complications. Spent much of Thursday wondering way was going on and debating whether I had to go to the Emergency room. But I’m fine now.
Today’s topic is tech.
A lot of people love the tech of Star Wars, they build Lego models (and sheesh, have you looked at the prices of those kits, there run to the hundreds of dollars!!!!). That’s never been my thing. I remember being blown away by the AT-AT Walkers on Hoth in Empire Strikes Back, but also thinking they were really impractical as fighting machines (to wit, the Endor Battle in Return of the Jedi. Too vulnerable.) As a kid, I never had any great interest in the ship technology of Star Wars other than the cool special effects. More recently, though, I’ve become a fan of Adam Savage’s Tested YouTube channel and I enjoy both his stories as a model maker on Episodes II and III, and his deep connections with the ILM community of spaceship builders and model makers. (Adam Savage is/was one half of the Mythbusters team, btw.)
Anyway, I’m here to talk about a few interesting bits of tech that didn’t make it on-screen.
Maul’s Ship. When I started thinking about Getting the Naboo Problem Solved, I couldn’t help but think about Darth Maul and how he got around. From Coruscant to Tatooine to Naboo. He had to have a ship, it had to be well-armed, with advanced weaponry and above all, a cloaking device. And once he was dead, that ship would be very useful. And it would be filled with useful things, no?
Well, it turns out that I was reinventing the wheel so to speak. Maul’s ship exists in both Canon and Legends:

It is called both The Sith Infiltrator or more romantically, the Scimitar. In both Canon and Legends, it originally built at the direction of Hego Damask, otherwise known as Darth Plagueis, and supposedly designed by Plagueis’ master, Darth Tenebrous.
It appears very briefly in The Phantom Menace:
And is otherwise forgotten in movie and TV canon. But it has an interesting and storied life in video games and comics. When the Jedi take possession of the ship after the Battle of Naboo, Jedi Master (and eventual High Councilor) Saesee Tiin says:
Eventually, it becomes Darth Sidious’ personal transport after first spending a few years stashed away in a Naboo storage facility, transporting him to various battles. Sadly, there doesn’t seem to be any storylines about the Scimitar in the Sequel era.
It’s also the Marysue of all Star Wars spaceships, since it can track another ship’s signature through hyperspace, something considered impossible for any other ship.
Maul’s Speeder bike. It actually has a name, a Sithly name - The Bloodfin. And I mention it here because it’s not one of those long, drawn out low-riders that Anakin rode in The Clone Wars or the Imps sped around on on Endor. Bloodfin looks like one of those crazy one-wheel jobs you might see at a car show. And honestly, there’s no way that Qui-Gon is going to be able to carry the T-14 Hyperspace Generator and Sabé back to the Nabooian ship on this thing. But hey, it’s fic, who cares?

Starlight Beacon. Again, this is a situation where I initially created a satellite that bounced out signals from the Core, and then, when I was looking for the right section on the Star Wars galaxy star map, I found that there was already a communications satellite in place. Or rather, there had been. The Starlight Beacon had been created, and then destroyed as part of 2021 The High Republic publishing project. Its continued existence in Obi-Wan's new timeline is one of those gratifying things, and will play a small role in upcoming chapters.

The Holo-Drama. Okay, it’s not tech. I couldn’t quite help myself. I just needed to give Obi-Wan a bit of a moment there and well, I needed to give myself one, too. Between the Darkness and the Dawn was the first longfic I wrote, nearly 13 years ago. Not going to mention the fandom, but it’s pretty recognizable (at least I think so). High-fives and bonus points to anyone who gets it.
See you next week, in front of the High Council. Things are moving along.
