Challenge #7

Make a list of fannish and/or creative resources.

As a life-long New Yorker, and specifically, a downstater who lives within an hour’s train ride of Manhattan, one of the greatest cultural centers of the planet (yes, I’m biased), I thought I’d focus my list on one of the best parts of New York, it’s greatest museum.

Now, you might say, Elr, most of us are well out of range of New York City and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

My friends, you are not! The Met has opened its vast collection and made it available for free digital access.

The first link is like walking into Aladdin’s Cave - not one are you given the keys to the Met’s collection, but links to many other great art museums in the U.S.: Open Access

This link will take you right to the search function for images in the Met, all 375,000 and counting: Search the Collection

And if you are looking for some digital art books for free, have at it: Free PDFs of Met Publications

And on a related note, have some delightful videos: Adam Savage Visits the Metropolitan Museum of Art - Playlist

And some helpful information about getting into the Metropolitan Museum of Art:

You don’t have to pay the "Suggested Admission" and can get in for free, if you are:
A NY State Resident, and Students In NY, NJ, & Connecticut

You may also get in for free if you have a valid military ID (this includes family), are employed by a Met corporate sponsor, hold a press ID, or have membership via American Alliance of Museums, or the International Council of Museums, or the Museum Council of NYC. For these last three, check with your public library - they may have passes to lend with reciprocal membership.

Otherwise, out-of-staters will have to pay a rather steep $30 per adult admission. Yes, it’s worth it, but it’s still a chunk of change that can be saved with proper planning.

Totally worth it. But, I will say, one of the (only) great things about D.C. is how very much of it is free. ❤️❤️

I love how many collections are online now. It's just the most helpful for researching random shit for fandoms. Though sometimes you can only see the catalogue listing, and not the item, but even that can be really helpful for tracking down dating.

that is so cool. so, so cool. in all honesty i'd pay $30 to get in because i'd be doing it so infrequently (i live in boston and the museum of fine arts here is $27) but the fact that so much of it is online is fabulous. i'll have to check out those adam savage videos too. he's so cute.
