Simon & Garfunkel - I Am Rock (Sounds of Silence)

I was honestly shocked when I went to look at songs from 1965 and found this one on the list. It always surprises me that S&G's entire ouvre was produced before I turned six - they broke up in 1970.

And yet their music is still as relevant as it was when it was new.

As for I Am a Rock, when I was a lonely, friendless teenager, I had the lyrics scrawled over every notebook and binder and book cover. I think I probably wrote "Islands never cry/And rocks feel no pain" a hundred times during my horrible ninth grade.

*sigh* They're so great.

I didn't really get into S&G until I'd fallen hard for Simon's solo career, then when I went back to explore them together, I was shocked to discover that I knew so many of their songs I just never knew who sang them. I guess that happens a lot in the days of radio (and my parents) being my only exposure to music.

S&G were such a part of my life soundtrack growing up, and I have just the opposite experience. I always need to check if a song is Paul Simon solo or S&G.
