The ghost was his constant companion, as unwelcome and unavoidable as the stench that rose off landfills in Staten Island in the summertime. His haunting wasn't anything as prosaic as Neal (who would certainly take issue with that comparison) - because Neal was not, whether in life or in death, prosaic.

No, Mozzie was haunted by the ghost of his own failure. There had been a moment when he could have fixed things himself, but no - he was too paranoid, too squeamish. He'd bought the kill, instead. And it was an utter failure.

If he'd done the job himself, if he'd done what was right and put that bullet through Matthew Keller's brain, Neal would be alive.

And Theodore Winters wouldn't have been left behind, haunted by his failures.

I love that you delved further, rather than just neal's death, you brought the death of teddy winters into mozzie's regrets. since I agree that this is how he'd feel, I find it a testament to his character that, though he claims to be a hardened criminal, he regrets not taking out keller far more than regretting neal getting involved with the fbi.
