Sara Ellis never takes “real” vacations. Getting away from it all, lounging poolside with the latest Swedish mystery novel and a tall glass of something or other isn’t her thing. Nor does she climb rocks, ski down mountains or sail to exotic destinations.
Oh, she does those things, and more, but never as a way to relax. If she lounges poolside, it’s because she’s scoping out the mark for a recovery. If she’s rock climbing in the White Mountains, skiing in Gstaad, or yachting off the coast of Bali, it’s all in the name of business.
When Sara Ellis needs too cool off, she delves deep into the back of her closet and pulls out the box kept carefully hidden away from even her closest acquaintances.
It contains a set of brushes, a pad of paper and a block of ink. The pad is nearly empty and the block of ink is reduced to a sliver, but are treasured none the less for their depletion. They were gifts from the young Japanese exchange student to an impressionable fourteen year old in the throws of her first crush. The young man had infinite patience for the awkward and chubby girl who followed him around with stars in her eyes.
When Sara Ellis wants to relax, she practices shodō. The slickness of the wet brush against the block of ink, the sweep of the brush across the paper, the order of the strokes to form the characters is pure pleasure.
She never saves any of her creations. She knows her technique is poor – she lacks the inner steadiness, the Buddhist peace, the Zen that would elevate her creation to something approaching art.
But that is not what she wants, nor what she needs. The simple act of creation is enough for her.
