Clinton knows that he shouldn't do this, and its possible that no amount of Halloween chocolate is going to be worth the heat he will to catch when he gets home in the morning. But he’s going to do so, anyway.
His mother is most emphatic – stay out of the old graveyard, it isn’t a place to play in. And when his father finds out that he spent the night with the dead, he will take the skin off his backside and have his ears burned in a harsh lecture (which he knows he fully deserves). His father won’t be ashamed or angry at his son for camping out over night in a cemetery (more likely, he’ll probably be secretly proud of Clinton’s bravery). Clinton’s punishment is for his direct disobedience of an order from his mother.
And despite all the grief he knows he is going to get in the morning, Clinton Jones isn’t the kind of kid that’s going to back down from a dare, even for the most dangerous ones.
He huddles against a gravestone, shivering in the cold and waits for the dawn and thinks about all the chocolate he’s going to collect in the morning.
