Day 18 – A movie that disappointed you the most
The Phantom Menace
I'm not even gracing this post with an image, that's how disappointed I was. And still am.
Okay, there were a couple of moments that I enjoyed – the relationship between Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon, the fight scene with Darth Maul, but that's it. Years and years and years of anticipation and what do I get? A bratty six year old. Midi-chlorians.
Jar-Jar Binks.
Fuck You, George Lucas.

Date: 2015-09-18 05:25 pm (UTC)I'm honestly curious. What makes Jar Jar so intolerable compared to the other characters in the Star Wars universe?
(And it's nine-going-on-ten year old. Just saying...)

Date: 2015-09-18 06:12 pm (UTC)He does serve a point in the plot; an important one. No Jar Jar, no Gungan army, Naboo is lost to the Trade Federation (which might not really make a difference on the galactical scale of things, since Palpatine still became Supreme Chancellor/future Emperor, but it definitely makes a difference to the people of Naboo). It's also thanks to Jar Jar (who is an outcast even between his own people) that the humans and Gungans of Naboo finally make peace. The one point that Qui-Gon is trying to get across is that everyone is important, even "pathetic liveforms" such as Jar Jar or Anakin.
I'll agree that the whole character wasn't written very well - for a "comic relief", the humor wasn't particularly smart or amusing. But I guess that without knowing of those 20th century movies, he's just a mild annoyance as opposed to something that bothers me. (What is Stepinfetchit and Mammy...?)

Date: 2015-09-18 09:59 pm (UTC)As a naive 14 years old, it *never* occurred to me he was supposed to be the stereotype of a black guy. He never had anything of a black guy to me. He was an alien, vaguely weird and clumsy. Yes he speaks funny, but so does Yoda. (and again, I never realized then that it was supposed to be a black stereotype, cause, well, I guess I have never heard a black person talk like that). To me, it didn't appear as an alien who couldn't speak well English (or French) but it was *his* language, the same same speaking in reverse is Yoda's.
I guess you cannot really "unsee" it, but if you could, Jar Jar would just appear as a goofy guy with a good heart.
