So, saw Avengers: Age of Ultron on Saturday and generally liked it (although a little less that the first Avengers movie and a LOT less than Winter Soldier). But one thing keeps making me scratch my head.

How did the Eastern European baddies get a hold of Loki's scepter? The last person who had possession of it was Natasha, when she stuck it into the Tesseract-generated portal. How did it get from her hands (and by extension, the Avengers' hands) into a Hydra scientist's?

Seems like a serious continuity flaw. Amongst others.

She turned the scepter over to SHIELD; SHIELD was infiltrated by HYDRA; HYDRA destroyed SHIELD; HYDRA got the scepter.

Strucker used to work for "SHIELD".

Specifically, we learned from Agents of SHIELD that Hydra-loyalists were able to get control of the base where SHIELD kept 084s like the scepter and took everything they could get their hands on in the chaos.

I'm trying to remember which MCU movie it was in that the spear showed up in a credit tag scene, and am coming up blank. I don't know that we ever were told how it got there; but it was known prior to this movie that it was in some Hydra scientist's hands. That was our first sight of the twins, too.

Presumably when SHIELD was performing the cleanup, some of the embedded Hydra got their hands on not only the spear, but all that Chitauri debris too; because I can't imagine SHIELD wanted that spread around, either. Given the whole "Item 47" Marvel One-Shot film, and all.

It's been at the end of Winter Soldier. :)

I just asumed that Shield gave it one of its scientist at the end of Avengers and, well, they happened to be HYDRA...

Mostly what happened is it got a lot better after episode six. You sort of have to grit your teeth until then.

Okay, I'm going blank on it happening in SHIELD, but yeah, the gist of my comment was going to be that whoever was going to "study" it, etc., after the end of Avengers 1 turned out to be Hydra, and it all related to Cap 2, etc., etc., too.

Some of y'all help my poor brain remember when/how it came up on SHIELD! LOL!! When I re-watched a lot of Season 1 of SHIELD w/my daughter, after Cap 2, I realized I'd forgotten a lot of bits and pieces, but that one's *still* not reappearing in my brain yet!

SHIELD has grown on me as it's progressed. The first few episodes (maybe even the 1st half of S1), it's really working on the backstory, etc., of *this* team, this group of people. But there are references to things in Cap 2, etc., that are sprinkled through there and you'd never have noticed them when they first aired (the "welder"-type of torch-thingy that both Nick and Maria Hill used in Cap 2? Guess who invented it!) -- and they're often in tiny, throw-away comments, but if you watch for them, they're there (I noticed most of them when I re-watched w/my daughter, not when they originally aired.)

But a few weeks before Cap 2 came out, SHIELD kicked it into gear. It was almost as if they'd been in low gear, just slowing building up momentum, and suddenly they really found their groove. The last few ep's were reallllly awesome. And I remember, vividly, being in Cap 2 w/my niece (who didn't watch SHIELD) -- and all my Marvel-loving friends weren't seeing Cap 2 for at least several days -- and being all bursting-at-the-seams with SQUEE that I couldn't talk to anyone about, b/c once the big Hydra reveal happened, all the previews, etc., for SHIELD *clicked* and I was like, "OHMYGOSH! They're going RIGHT WITH THIS!" Like, *immediately*, they reacted to Cap 2. It opened on Friday, and on the following Tues., Coulson, et al., were dealing with the fall-out, and you *had* to have seen Cap 2 before watching that episode, or you'd have just ruined Cap 2 for yourself.

*ahem*

Yeah. I may be a bit of a fangeek about this... *snort*

It was taken into possession of SHIELD. SHIELD was infiltrated by Hydra. SHIELD fell in WS and there you have Hydra has the scepter.

Edited to add that the Avengers disbanded at the end of the first movie - and the scepter would have been placed in SHIELD's possession since Natasha and the whole operation was a SHIELD initiative.

Thor was never the brains in the family.......

That was evil wasn't it?

Blame it on Joss and his ridiculousness....

Edited to add - but on further thought - the scepter was given to Loki by some weird Chitauri aliens connected with Thanos so maybe Thor figured it wasn't his to have?? I don't know. It's all holes.

Yes the Russo brothers will be doing Civil War and Infinity Wars parts I and II. They are the treasured directors but at the same time, the writers - Mcfeely and Markus are really treasures too. They wrote Cap I and II considered some of the best of Marvel with character driven plots.

My husband inner child does enjoy that the movie does take things directly from the comics. Like transformed Hulk wearing purple pants.

I always assume that the plot holes are things that are covered in canon that I don't follow i.e. Agents of Shield and the comics. Surely, Joss Whedon can do no wrong! ;)

According to wiki (http://marvelcinematicuniverse.wikia.com/wiki/Chitauri_Scepter) it went from Natasha to S.H.I.E.L.D and then to Hydra. Like everyone here has said... only they give you names and specifics in the above link. ;)

Apparently there was a comic prelude? (http://marvelcinematicuniverse.wikia.com/wiki/Avengers:_Age_of_Ultron_Prelude_-_This_Scepter%27d_Isle) It takes place in the time between Winter Soldier and Ultron.

With the Battle of New York concluded, the Chitauri Scepter that was used by the Asgardian war criminal Loki is given to S.H.I.E.L.D. scientists Nicholas Cooper and Mark Smith for study. Smith, who abhors his scientific position, is approached by secret HYDRA leader Wolfgang von Strucker to join HYDRA, which is working within S.H.I.E.L.D. Accepting Strucker's offer, Smith steals the scepter and kills Cooper, bringing it to Strucker's facility in Sokovia, a European country embroiled in constant conflict.
