This story is dedicated to [livejournal.com profile] gyzym  who has held my hand and encouraged me when I felt this was all turning to shite. I couldn’t ask for a better friend. The Blood of Helios – Chapter VII – A Visitor

Neal had a visitor early the next day - the Kiss' current Sunlight Agent, Frank. The man was big, bluff with a hearty bonhomie that seemed as fake as his carefully coiffed head of dark hair. He didn't seem at all agitated about being replaced.

"I'm looking forward to spending the rest of my life without having any dealings with the vamps, the weres, the fae and the rest of the creepy lot of 'em. Humans and only humans - that's all I want to talk to, see, and fuck with. I've been doing this for fifty-odd years and let me tell you, I've had my fill of the woo-woo."

Neal was puzzled, the man didn't look a day over fifty and he didn't hesitate to say so.

"Oh, that's one of the few advantages of working closely with the prets - the preternaturals - their immortality rubs off on humans. But I'd keep that under my hat, if you know what I mean." Frank winked at Neal and made an odd gesture, pressing his index finger against the side of his nose. "Anyway, if you're smart - and you look like a smart kid - you'll wait a few decades before starting to skim off the take."

"You steal from the Kiss?" Neal was appalled.

"Oh, they know all about it - I think they expect it. No one, vampire or human, puts one person in charge of collecting the tithes, enforcing the fealty and clan oaths, negotiating the daytime contracts without expecting a little taken off the top." Frank was smug about his stealing, but Neal could never see a time when he'd stop fearing the singular retribution of one Captain Peter Burke.

"So, you must have a few questions about working for the vamps."

Neal did, but he didn't know if he wanted to get that information from Frank. But he was curious about the agent's interactions with the Captain and his cadre. "What do you know about Captain Burke? Work with him much?"

"Burke - that's one scary vampire. Almost as scary as the Master, Hughes." Frank took a messy swallow of the coffee that Mairead had served, rivulets of brown liquid dripping down his jowls. "Now, I don't work too closely with the Captain...and believe me, I don't want to. He's a monster's monster. He'll take your head off as soon as look at you."

That information was completely contrary to Neal's own experiences. "Why do you say that?"

"Well, besides the fact that I've seen him behead a kinsman for selling fake securities to humans? Or that he's been known to stake out another vampire to burn in daylight for overfeeding?" Frank's voice held equal measures of fear and contempt.

"Overfeeding?"

"That's when a vamp takes too much blood and kills his meal. Burke considers that murder, even when the human rises as a vampire. Not that that always happens. Most don't rise. I don't know why - they don't share that information. Burke's rule over the New York clan is pretty absolute - no one gets to make a new vampire in the Whryccrid Kiss without his expressed approval first."

"But you steal from the clan - and you don't worry?"

"The amounts are small, and money doesn't really matter to them. It's power and control. That's what the vamps are all about."

For the little information that Frank provided, he actually gave Neal a great deal to think about, not only about Captain Burke’s ruthlessness, but that he ruled the New York Whryccrid clan. Neal let Frank’s talk - blather really - about his day-to-day activities, and how to minimize the amount of effort he needed to expend to do the minimal amount of work - slide over him.

"Well, if there's nothing else you want to know, I'm going to take myself off." Frank handed Neal a small notebook. "This is the current quarter's assignments - where you need to go, and who you need to see. If you need some muscle - and you look like you will, Jimmy's a good guy to ask."

"Jimmy Squarefoot?" Neal was surprised to get confirmation of Elizabeth's information quite so quickly.

"Yeah - he's a scary looking thing, and that works well for him. He'll do your leg breaking and arm twisting. If Jimmy's not around, Black Annis is your next best bet - she'll eat the mark's kin if needed. The jacks-in-irons are a little overkill if you know what I mean. I never liked using 'em - when they break something, it's usually broken for good."

Frank finished his coffee and stuffed the rest of his croissant into his mouth, completely disregarding the drips and crumbs that stained his expensive, but ugly tie. He slapped his hands against his fat thighs and hefted his bulk out of the chair. He offered a greasy hand to Neal, who just looked at it. Frank grimaced and wiped in against his jacket, leaving a streak of crumbs and grease against his lapel. He offered his hand again, and Neal gingerly shook it. Neal followed him as he waddled to the front door, Mairead was waiting with his hat and overcoat. When he thoughtlessly thanked the brownie, she hissed at him and disappeared in a whirl of dust that rattled the windows and sent the precious antiques that decorated the foyer quivering.

"What did I do?"

"Frank - just go. Enjoy your retirement." Neal opened the door and practically pushed the man down the front steps. How could anyone who worked with the preternatural community for half a century be completely ignorant of basic courtesy?

The rest of Neal's morning and most of the afternoon passed in the pleasant chore of trying on his new wardrobe. Mairead’s cousins were efficient tailors. June was delighted with the results.

"I swear - Byron didn't even look quite so good in those suits." June ran her hands across Neal's back, smoothing the fabric of one of the Devore jackets. Neal enjoyed the caress. He couldn't remember the last time someone touched him like that - none of his lovers, and certainly not his own mother, whose face he couldn't remember.

She handed him a hat - not the one Byron won from the Red Cap, bless Anwyn, but a black trilby with a black silk band. Neal grinned at her and flipped the hat down his arm and popped it on his head. June laughed at the trick. "Practice that one much?"

"Yeah - for hours." Neal reached out behind June's head and plucked one of the roses that bloomed from the wallpaper and handed it to her with a gallant flourish. She tucked it behind her ear and gave him a flirtatious wink.

"Peter tells me that you're going to work at the Kiss’ headquarters for a while."

"I guess." Neal was a bit unnerved about the change in plans. "Frank called Captain Burke a 'monster's monster.' Should I be worried? You seem to think that he's an honorable man."

June's eyebrows nearly disappeared into her hairline. "I told you, I've known Peter Burke for over three centuries - you can trust him to deal with you fairly and honestly. But don't mistake honor for weakness. He'll crush you if you break that trust."

Neal sensed that June wasn't telling him something, but right now - he was content. His instincts told him that Burke was honorable, and even Frank's wild tales seemed to jibe with that. A remnant of the sexual daydream he had about the vampire ghosted across his mind and he shivered.

"I hope you're not getting sick. You should take a nap." June advised with a touch of motherly asperity. "Peter will be here shortly after sunset and you'll be up for most of the night. You'll need your rest." June pressed a kiss against his cheek and left him to his own devices.

Neal stripped, carefully hung up his suit and laid naked on his bed, the weak afternoon light playing hide and seek with the clouds still warmed his skin. Without conscious effort, Neal's thoughts went to Captain Burke. The vampire fascinated him -- June clearly adored him, his beautiful wife didn't hesitate to lay claim to his affections without an ounce of fear, while that fat buffoon, Frank, was terrified of the Captain. Desire pooled in his groin, an almost alien sensation. He curved his hand around his penis and lightly stroked himself. Masturbation was never an indulgence while he was in captivity. The darkness seemed to sap every ounce of desire from him, just as it stifled his creativity.

Now though, with the sunshine against his skin, it was all he could do not to give into his desires. He forced himself to take it slowly, fingertips teasing against his balls, the sensitive spot between the back of his scrotum and his perineum. He let his free hand drift over his hips, tangle a bit in his pubic hair, tease around his navel and along his ribs. Just the fingertips.

Until he reached his nipples, which had furled into tight buds when the light first touched them. He pinched his left nipple hard, and blood flooded into his cock. His right hand stroked lightly, his cock reaching full erection for the first time in over a decade. Ten idle years left his hands callous free, but the delicate skin was unused to any rough treatment. Neal forced himself to go slowly, to savor the sensations. He thought about Peter, and how his hands would feel on his naked body. Were those hands calloused, rough? Would Peter be gentle or harsh?

Neal’s own hands got just a bit rougher. He pulled at his nipple, then pinched it again, letting his fingernails dig into the ultra-sensitive skin, imaging that it was Peter’s teeth on his body. His dry right hand was dry no longer, as a spurt of precome erupted from his penis. He used the moisture as a lubricant and started to speed up his strokes, letting the hard cuticle on his thumb catch on the edge of his cock head. He tightened his fist around his cock, flicking up and down with a motion that was deeply embedded in his muscle memory. Hell, no matter how long it was, no man forgets how to jerk off.

The sun broke free of a cluster of dark clouds, just as it was starting to sink past the ledge of the terrace wall and the rays of sunlight poured over Neal’s body. His back arched in pleasure, like a cat into a caress and he erupted, come pouring through his fingers and across his belly. Neal fought against the natural urge to fall asleep.

The Captain would be here soon.

Hm. I think you and I have very different definitions of "gratuitous." I think that scene was vitally important to understanding the deeper thematic explorations of somethingsomethings asdfaewfksdm so fucking hot.

;)
Actually, I do think that the HOTNESS was necessary - it had me wondering all sorts of things about what Peter could feel or sense about Neal, and it totally is important for showing why their relationship is not just conventional ownership.

That was lovely. This is a beautiful world.

Even the repulsive Frank was expertly portrayed.

The Captain would be here soon. I imagine so. Can't believe anybody attached to Neal would sleep through that.

I just found this. It's surprisingly lighthearted for a vampire AU, and yet it's got darker threads just under the surface. The themes of light and dark you have here, some obvious and others more subtle, weave together very well.

I really like this series, and will be eagerly awaiting the next chapter.

I WAS GOING TO REVIEW EVERY CHAPTER BUT THEN I GAVE UP BECAUSE I WAS TOO EAGER TO SEE WHAT WAS GOING TO HAPPEN IN THE NEXT ONE. I FAIL, I KNOW.

seriously words cannot express how awed i am at your worldbuilding skills. all of the characters--you characterize them so deftly! i love that we get to see peter's character from multiple perspectives and gives him a great degree of dimensionality. it allows us to draw our own conclusions about him and that conclusion is BADASS. <333

and neal--i think you've captured him perfectly, the way that his mind is always working, his casual charm. plus his affinity for the sunlight ugh elr, I AM SERIOUSLY SERIOUSLY IN LOVE WITH ALL OF THESE CONCEPTS YOU'VE SEAMLESSLY DRAWN TOGETHER.

but as for my favorite character, i really really love june in this, she's so dignified and elegant and at the same time, still retains the exuberance of a young girl and that's exactly what summer is like, isn't it? perfect, just perfect.

i am ridiculously intrigued by what neal actually is and how we get from here to the point in the prologue. you are writing something absolutely epic my friend and i am impatiently waiting for your next part <3333

So beautiful. And I'd argue with you about the masturbation scene being gratuitous. It felt to me like a fairly important window into Neal's nature and his recovery from incarceration. So I guess if it's gratuitous, you've sure got me fooled. ;-)
