32 times, the basic civil right of marriage has been defeated at the polls. The haters and fear mongerers kept trying, but they've lost their hold:

In Maine, marriage-equality proponents have the upper hand, 55-45.

In Maryland, the contest is very close: 51 percent to 49 percent, with same-sex marriage supporters with a slight edge.

In Minnesota, the question is worded slightly differently as a matter of banning same-sex marriage. Opponents of the ban are leading, 57-42.

Washington State hasn't reported in yet.

3 and 32, and lets hope it's 4 and 32 when the sun rises

And Tammy Baldwin was elected! Whoot!

(Now if Romney would just concede so I could get some sleep!)

A decade ago, my state passed one of those horrible constitutional amendments, and I secluded myself in the bathroom at my workplace and cried. Four years ago, having just one same-sex marriage initiative win at the polls was impossible, even in one of the most liberal, gay-friendly states in the nation.

Today, it looks like same-sex marriage is passing in not just one state, but three! I never dreamed I'd see the world get better so fast. There's a long way to go, but more hope than there's ever been.

Or, shorter: SQUEE! \o/

YAYYYYY! (Although as of a few minutes ago, the Minnesota amendment banning gay marriage is ahead by a few hundred votes.)

...And now it's behind by a few thousand. It's going to be a nailbiter.

But in other good news: The Republicans' war on women blew up on them. The likes of Todd Akin and Richard Mourdock lost. Women won more Senate seats than they've ever had. I'd say that's a pretty clear message.

Good news ! A law to allow same-sex marriage and adoption is discussed in French parliament today too. :D
Looks like we're heading the right way.

That's such good news.

I was just watching the coverage. Marriage Eqaulity passed in Maine and Washington State too. And Minnesota shot down the ammendent to ban same-sex marriage. I saw it mentioned above Tammy Baldwin is the first openly gay person to be elected to, it was either the Senate or The House I think. I missed that part.

I just read an article that Spain shot down an appeal to overturn a law they passed in 2005 making same-sex marriage legal.

Good news all around.

And I would agree with Jonathan Chait that things are likely to keep getting better, because, as he writes in his New York magazine blog, "2012 may have been the last chance to enact an undiluted conservative agenda. The electorate is driving steadily leftward, with the oldest voters representing the GOP’s strongest constituency, and the youngest voters its weakest. Every four years, a new 18–22-year-old cohort arrives that is more liberal than the one that has died off in the interim." Let's hear it for the Millennials.

Things look so much better than they did this time yesterday! Here's hoping the "backlash against the backlash" that I just heard discussed on the news will put an end to the Tea Party's influence. I am even cautiously optimistic that Romney and Obama can in fact sit down together and make their people do the same thing for the good of the country. If the rabid Obama-haters can be reined in by moderate Republicans (if such fantastic creatures still exist), then there's actually a chance to work on fixing the economy in a way that's fair to everybody. And YAY for the marriage equality victories - this is just the beginning!
