One of Those Days

Not been a good day today.

Changed a light bulb in the very beautiful crystal chandelier in my office. Shorted the circuit. Reset the circuit and then noticed that the light was flickering. Went to shut off the light and the circuit blew again. Reset it, took out the flickering lightbulb and turned the light back on. Circuit blew again and now the breaker is bad.

Removed the breaker from the box, except that I can't figure out how to get the last wire out of the breaker.

Electrician can't come until Tuesday morning. Have an extension cord so at least the modem is powered up.

Which means that the first claims post will still go live around 10 am.

I didn't need this, today of all days.

Thanks, but I'm good! Power is on in the rest of the house and I've got the modem running with an extension cord. Just annoyed and on a bad day to begin with.

Sympathy! House problems are always fraught with worry and stress, besides the hassle of getting them fixed.

Just heard from my contractor/electrician - he was sort of freaked when I told him I tried to change the circuit breaker at the electrical panel.

So he'll be here in the morning and I will have power and light and be all happyhappyhappy.

Friends like that are good to have. (I hope he doesn't find an underlying problem that, y'know, requires rewiring the house. Ignore me, I fret.)

Contractor friend came and took my chandelier with him - that what needs rewiring. Everything else tested fine. Thank goodness!

Have light and power in my office, so all is good with House Wonderful again!

Actually, changing circuit breakers is one of the few electrical jobs a homeowner can do.

Huh. You're strongly discouraged to do so around here. Turn 'em off, sure. Changing 'em, no. *ponders* Changing the fuse, that's fine. But that's it.

Maybe things are different in the US? I mean, anything from light bulbs to light switches are different, and IIRC, fuses look different too, so... *shrugs*

My contractor, who came and fixed the circuit and just left with my light fixture to rewire, gave me hell for playing around with the circuit breaker panel.

And banned me from home improvement videos on YouTube!

You have my condolances. I've dumped so much money into my house in the past 12 months (including last week's plumbing emergency) that, after 29 years of home ownership, renting is looking better and better.

Yes, thank goodness. He came and checked everything out. Gave me a bit of hell for going into the circuit breaker box. Turned out that it was GFI switch, so as long as there was a fault/short in the circuit, the whole circuit was down.

So Paul (my hero) has the fixture to rewire, he put back the plain builder's fixture that I kept, and will come back with the rewired chandelier during the week.

I am back at my desk, and out of my funk (which predated the lighting/power issue bigtime).
