It was supposed to be another routine interview with a possible suspect; another routine day in the series of routine days that seemed to comprise their lives lately. Peter would ask a few questions; Neal would flirt or misdirect the suspect’s attentions, and they’d go back to the office – either to further research or prep paperwork or do whatever they had to do to move the case forward.

Except that someone gave them the wrong address; someone else thought there were something they weren’t, and somehow they ended up being Peter and Nicholas Stone-Halden, a newly married set of venture capitalists looking to invest a significant portion of their liquid capital in an off-the-books opportunity that wasn’t quite legal. Peter was never quite so happy that Neal was an alias savant and able to create their mythology on the fly, but there were still some difficult moments, like explaining why neither man was wearing his wedding ring (Neal had yanked Peter’s off as they were walking into the meeting). But their quick thinking bought them entre into a multi-billion dollar money laundering scheme.

All well and good for Gotham’s most dynamic duo since Batman and Robin, except that someone needed to explain to Peter’s wife why her husband was now married to another man, and would need to carry out that role twenty-four/seven for the next six weeks.

“Well, you’ve explained to Elizabeth that you need to participate in a bachelor auction. You even proposed to another woman and El didn’t kick your ass.” Neal tried to rationalize the situation as they sat in Peter’s car, which was parked in front of his house.

Peter concurred. “Yeah. She was annoyed, but pretty cool with it.”

“And remember when we faked your affair with Sara?”

“Yup – El even stage-managed the whole porno shoot.”

“So, she should be okay with the two of us being married, right? Living together. Sharing a bedroom.”

“My wife is very broad minded, you know.”

“Just one of the reasons why she’s so amazing.”

And yet neither man was willing to get out of the car just yet.

“She’s broad-minded, but there’s also the question of going too far.”

“You don’t think El’s really going to be upset?”

Peter looked at his hands. “Can I have my wedding ring back, please?” He was unnerved enough as it was. Trying to explain this situation with Neal, while was Neal was holding onto such an important symbol seemed like tempting the gods.

“Oh, yeah – right.” He fished around his pockets and came up empty.

“Neal?”

“Hold on. Just hold on a sec.” Neal got out of the car – his pants were too tight to do this right. “Ah – here you go.” He held out the worn gold band.

Peter took it and slid it back on his finger, where it belonged. Suddenly everything felt right and he got out of the car, took a deep breath and said, “Let’s do this.”

Elizabeth, in her awesomeness, was surprising copacetic about Peter’s new undercover role. She looked from Peter to Neal and back to her husband and started chuckling. Both men watched, bemused, as the chuckles turned to full blown gales of hysterical laughter.

Neal whispered to Peter, “Has she gone off of the deep end?”

“I don’t know.” He sat down next to his wife and took her hand. “It’s okay, hon.”

She pulled her hand free and gave Peter a playful slap. At least Peter hoped it was playful.

“You make … such … a …lovely cou…ple.” Hiccups punctuated Elizabeth’s reply. “Who … catered … the happy event?”

Neal sat down next to her, he wasn’t laughing. “Elizabeth, you know I’d never …”

She cut him off, laughter still in her eyes. “Yes, yes – I know you’d never, but the truth is that you’ve had designs on my husband since the beginning. It’s a good thing I like to share. And a better thing that Peter does, too.”
