Very interesting article in the New York Times today: AP Impact: Some Ankle Bracelets Go Unchecked (or you can download the PDF here).

Apparently, law enforcement is so overwhelmed that they can't keep up with checking on all monitoring unit alerts.

I don't mean to make light of the tragedies noted in the article, but just pointing out that maybe Neal treats his radius as a joke because he's learned that no one ever checks up on him,

Peter checks. Peter ALWAYS checks.

I don't think Neal treats his radius as a joke. I just think in the version of NYC where he lives, things are positioned differently to the NYC in our reality. *nods*

They are, at the very least, lax in checking it. I mean, even when Neal was fresh out of prison he managed to get all the way to Peter's living room before anybody noticed he was out of his radius.

Fascinating and frightening article. Quite different than how the system is portrayed on TV.

On the other hand, I still see Peter conducting a frequent review of Neal's tracking data. :)

Ya know, the mere thought of a sex offender skulking around a playground or school without anyone checking up on that...makes me physically sick.

FFS, people!

I mean, Neal is cute and adorable and a modern Robin Hood with no impulse control, so he's not really hurting anyone (who doesn't at least somewhat deserve it). If he can go traipsing all over NY state without anyone batting an eyelash, fine.

But sex offenders? Let's ignore the fact that they should be locked up, period. But if they're not closely monitored 24/7 then... I'm just speechless.

No wonder Peter vertifies. Remember when Neal was surprised that Peter checked his anklet.
On personnel note, one of my high school classmates had a sister raped and murdered by a sex offender released on parole back in the 70s pre-anklet. Shocked the entire rural community.

I admit that I didn't read the article, but I could imagine this could lead to an interesting fic..... ;p

Mm, yeah. What good is a set radius if no one official cares? And if no one official cares, why should Neal?

::gloms right back::

I miss you, too! I do exist. I'm writing a ridiculous fic in a crossover that no one knows both fandoms and so will likely never see the light of day.

LJ access during the work day is spotty at best (the firewall blocks some but not all of LJ; predicting where I can get to is impossible). Evenings I'm AFK a lot because of small monkeys. Work doesn't (oddly enough) block FB or Tumblr, so I'm there more than here.

All is mostly OK. Small monkeys turned 4 (!) on the 19th. No idea how that happened.

We can get to DropBox, which is weird, because IT doesn't like DropBox. Our proxy is bizarre (made more bizarre by us being a security software company).

We stopped writing the column because Patch couldn't afford to pay us. I miss writing it too. We are thinking of starting it up again as a blog.

I miss you tons and tons. I thought of you a lot last week when I saw some pictures from current filming of White Collar and when I needed a pic I knew was in the collection that you sent me for my Matt B'Omer project. (Not one I used; it was a still from "The New Normal.")

It's a Glee/Sports Night crossover. It wants to be finished (I am almost done with it), but I lost my writing mojo for a bit. It might be coming back; I will have to try.

I would be thrilled to see your story. I sometimes feel that Sorkin owns my soul and writes my dialogue. Do you have it in Google Drive (for which I can give you my gmail address) or do you need an e-mail address to send me a file?

::hugs::

Yeah -- the DB website and the app look different to the proxy. I don't know why. But my team uses DB for transferring files around the team, so we are glad that both the app and the website play nicely with our firewall and proxy.

We just got the right to repost the columns that we did for Patch, so that will be the seed for the new blog. No timetable right yet, but it's something we're both motivated to get up and running.

The best e-mail address to use for sending me files is gnomi [at] asknomi [dot] com. You could also just send it to me at gnomi [at] livejournal [dot] com; either way it will get to me.

(I debated using a Neal icon, then debated using a West Wing icon, and finally settled on the hug, which is what I really want to send to you.)
