“I cannot, for my nation, my culture, my class, demand privileges which I refuse other groups.”

Eleanor Roosevelt

It is a terrible thing that so many of this great nation's politicians have not and will not grasp this ideal. But yesterday, the people spoke, and spoke loudly, clearly and with great emphasis. In Maryland, in Maine, In Minnesota and hopefully in Washington State, too, voters turned away from the hate and the lies and gave all of their citizens the same privileges that the majority enjoy.

The fiftieth anniversary of Eleanor Roosevelt's passing is today. With yesterday's election results, I think she'd be pleased to see how her work as continued.

Oh alas, I wish that Michigan were one of those states. But Michigan's voters passed a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage several years ago, and we don't yet have the momentum to get another ballot initiative to overturn that. (On the bright side, our incumbent Senator Debbie Stabenow beat her odious opponent like a rented drum.)

In Minnesota, however, the voters did defeat a ban on same-sex marriage, and also defeated a Voter ID requirement. American ideals 2, bigots 0 in the Land o' Lakes.

Because a neighboring state institued ID, a majority of my voters already had their IDs out when registering. All of the poll workers told our voters - ID not needed. The only time I use a presented ID is to get the spelling correct. V and B, C and K, same sound with multiple spellings, etc
At a recent gallery exhibit of political cartoons, one really struck home. Imagine outside a courthouse with many steps. At the top of the steps(of success) are women's right to vote and multiple other social issues passed along with how many years to achieve that success. Struggling on the steps below is gay marriagle receiving much encouragment from above. The cartoon was first printed over 20 years ago!! Still timely.

Four for four last night! But it is galling that any citizen's civil rights should be at the mercy of voters. Until the Federal government backs equality across the boards, it's too easy to lose what people worked so hard for. If voting rights were left up to the states, I wonder where we'd be here in Georgia and several other Bible Belt states. Marriage equality should work the same way. And of course once marriage is legal, then adoption rights should follow automatically. The outlook seems much brighter to me than it did this time yesterday.

I am not so optimistic about adoption. Here in France the law is getting discussed. The part about marriage is not too controversal (apart in the religious circles but I don't think it will prevent that part of the law to be voted). but adoption is another thing and it is much more controversial, and not  because of religious believes but because of the question of the well-being of the children who might need a father and a mother to grow-up... (I do not agree with that but that is the bottom line of the debate here)

I don't know much about adoption law in this country, but I think it varies from state to state. I believe that in some cases single parents are allowed to adopt. Where this is true, some of the same-sex parent hurdles might be avoided. Are single people allowed to adopt in France? The case can be made that it is better for the child to have one loving parent (or two of the same sex) than to grow up in the foster-care system.

OT: I know you from the USA White Collar forum! What has happened to them? Did the storm have some kind of delayed effect? I noticed the Chat feature says the forums will be back, but doesn't explain anything. Your posts are always interesting and well thought out.

Single parents can adopt in France, and most same-sex couples adopt kids this way for now, but then the second parent has no rights and isn't recognized by the law as a parent too. That's the main issue of the situation and that's why same-sex couples are fighting for adoption. Also, in French law, marriage allows you to adopt as a "couple" and not only as a parent. Hence the importance of marriage (and all the controversy).
I agree that it's probably better for a kid to be loved by one parent or 2 same-sex parents, but some psychiatrists do not seem to agree. And I really don't see the difference between having only one parent, and having 2 mothers or 2 fathers... Also, unless they live in the jungle, a kid will probably grow-up around men and women anyway...

Ah yes the forum... It was hacked last Sunday. Some wannabee pirate who was celebrating Guy Fawkes's Night (5th of November was on Monday) I don't know how long it might take, but I'm seriously missing the forum !
You can come over to timdekayforum.org if you want to talk about Tim or White Collar. :)

\o/ Maryland!!! My state!!! If anyone wants to read the law, just go to my journal. I am so happy and excited for this..

I want to say it is possible to convert people. My hubby has been a stalwart Republician. When I spoke to him about this issue, he was unsure. Then I asked him point blank - why would you vote against equality. It stopped him and he went and read the referendum. Now luckily my hubby is not a brainless twit and he agreed. He voted for it.

I've also converted him on many other issues (so I really don't think he is a Republician anymore).

Very happy to live in Maryland....very happy.

Yesterday, was also the anniversary of Colorado being the first state to pass women's sufferage. The women's vote certainly was heard yesterday.

Are you going to be affected by the next nor'easter?
