“I want the two of you to stop fighting, NOW.”

It was as if she never opened her mouth. The boys were going at it like hammer and tongs. She hated fighting – the loud voices, the stress that polluted the air, the anxiety that the belligerence created.

“I will not stand for this for another minute.”

They kept at it. Like kids in a schoolyard, fighting over who gets to play on the swings.

Then she remembered the trick she learned when she had taken Satchmo to obedience classes all those years ago and she went into the kitchen and filled up the spray bottle with ice cold water.

They were still going at it – it was ridiculous, but she could put a stop to it right now.

Without any warning and the nozzle on stream, she first squirted Peter, then Neal.

Right in their faces.

As one, they turned to her and opened their mouths in protest. She squired them again, this time, hitting Neal’s nose and Peter’s chin.

“What the hell was that for?” Peter’s outrage would have been endearing, if he wasn’t whining.

“To get you to stop fighting.” She wasn’t brooking any more nonsense.

“We weren’t fighting.” This was from Neal – whose voice – not thirty seconds ago – was loud enough to set the plates rattling. He wiped the water off his face with the back of his sleeve, reinforcing the image of a spoiled 9-year old.

“Look guys – I know you’ve got cabin fever – we all do, but if you want to fight over whether Batman is a better superhero than Superman, you’ll have to just do it outside, and maybe get some shoveling in.”

El was rewarded with twin pouts. She was going to suggest that they take their aggression out on her – in bed, but that seemed a little too much like a reward. Besides, the sidewalk really did need clearing.
