Whenever Neal sees a rainbow, he remembers a day he had with Kate – one of the most perfect of his life.
They were struggling – their money gone, barely making the rent. But Neal managed to scrape together enough for a trip to the Botanical Gardens. They took subways and buses and by the time they arrived, the warm spring day had turned cool and windy. A storm was threatening now – but Kate didn’t want to turn back. They wandered through the gardens – Neal found a cluster of bluebells – they weren’t nearly as blue as Kate’s eyes. Kate pointed out a raft of irises – and they couldn’t help but say “Van Gogh” at the same time.
As they explored, it began to pour without warning. They didn’t bother to run inside, taking shelter under an ancient oak. Neal cloaked Kate with his body, but keeping her dry was a pointless effort. Spring storms in New York are intense – deluging everything in their path. He looked down at her, she was like a drenched kitten – her lips curled in laugher, her huge blue eyes framed by eyelashes wetly clumped into star-shaped fans, and he thought this is the woman I need to spend the rest of my life with.
And just a quickly as the storm came, it rolled away and Kate’s smile grew impossibly bigger.
“Look, Neal!”
He turned around – the sun was pouring out from behind the dark remnants of the storm clouds, the light catching the drops still in the air and a full rainbow blossomed, arching across the sky. As he caught his breath in wonder, Kate whispered to him.
“Make a wish, Neal.”
He did – he wished that this happiness would never end.
But like the rainbow, their joy was too ephemeral to last.

Date: 2011-02-20 06:49 pm (UTC)I am not a fan of Neal/Kate either - but something about the prompt from lj user=photoash cried out for something bittersweet, and there is nothing more bittersweet than young Neal in love (with a treacherous woman).

And then you there's the emotional impact! Well done.

Date: 2011-02-28 09:29 pm (UTC)Thing is, it makes most sense for the sex scene to involve Neal/Kate, but you've mentioned not being a fan of the pairing. My fic is essentially Neal's memory of a very hot sexual encounter that took place years ago, early in their relationship.
So would it be cool with you if I kept it as Neal/Kate? If not, I could tweak things to make it Neal/OFC.
