Summary: Obi-Wan Kenobi has never known it, but he has always been the Force’s Champion, destined to suffer infinite sadness in defense of the Light. On his last turn on the wheel, responsibility for The Chosen One, the false child of prophecy, had been thrust upon him with no warning, and Darkness held the upper hand.

But this time, the Force has marshaled its power and will protect its Champion until the time is right, no matter how long Obi-Wan has to wait and how much he has to suffer.

Or,

Obi-Wan is reborn as a twelve-year old.

He wakes up on a slavers’ ship, with all of his prior life’s memories intact, and he’s bound for Tatooine with a Force-inhibitor collar around his neck, a bomb implanted in his spine, and no way of knowing what state of the Galaxy is in.

Just another day in the life of the Force’s Champion.

Chapter Summary: Pieces begin to fall into place.

Mace is on the trail of the Sith master, or at least the master of the Zabrak Sith that Qui-Gon and Anakin had killed on Tatooine eight years ago. Obi-Wan is still tormented by evil dreams, but an old friend tells him that he needs to take a trip. And Master Yoda is finally back at the Temple, and he gets some potentially unwelcome news.

Not a lot of progress this week. My bestie, [profile] writestufflee was visiting, and while we’d thought we’d get lots of writing done, we didn’t. We talked and talked and talked. And ate lots of good food. And then [personal profile] ell came by and more food was eaten. And then I needed to let Writestufflee go home.

I’ve been struggling with one damn scene and trying to figure out how to make it work. I think after four days of rewriting the same scene, it’s got to go. I’ll save it to the outtakes folder and share it when the whole story is done.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

And onto Chapter 54…

So. Much. Plot.

We’ve got Mace hijacking Quinlan as a mission partner. And these two actually work really well together. Mace isn’t an asshole-stick-in-the-mud that the Anakin-lovers contingent always portrays him as. Yes, he was always conscious of his dignity, and that he was almost too young when he was made a High Council member and then Master of the Order, but he’s a brilliant and compassionate Jedi who knows what he’s doing. He’s not a fossil like Ki-Adi-Mundi or a jerk like Even Piell (admittedly, I really only know these two from how they are portrayed in fic, because they barely have any presence in canon).

Mace understands what Quinlan does, what his attitude is going to be, and he’s not an idiot — he doesn’t expect a Shadow to behave like a Consular Jedi. And so he gets Quinlan’s respect and a stellar mission partner from the get-go.

The whole Polis Massa investigation shows us how careless and arrogant the Sith have become. Plagueis knows that there’s a colony on Polis Massa, but he’s never actually been there. He’s passed by it on his way to and from Mustafar when he’s met with the Techno-Union, so it seemed like a good place to "dump" Palpatine’s body. Naboo is "sort of" in the area, but that’s like saying that Maine is near Florida, or Moscow is close to Rome. Plagueis never thought that anyone, least of all the Jedi would bother to check out the lies he’s told.

While there’s no baseball in Star Wars, this is Strike One for Darth Plagueis. He didn’t even swing at the ball.

A comment about Lene Kostana’s journals. I know I kind of trashed her portrayal in the comics in last week’s meta. Let’s forget about that for now. This week, she’s very useful. If a little crazy.

Lene Kostana is Altiri, and somewhat long-lived. She was born 235 BBY and took Sifo-Dyas as a padawan when she was 145 years old. There is no death date for here in Wookieepedia, but her entry doesn’t give her a happy life after Sifo-Dyas was knighted. Most of her story is in Dooku: Jedi Lost and the comics that I loathed on last week. Since Dooku doesn’t follow the dark path, her story is different, too.

I figured if she was a collector of Sith artifacts, she would certainly cross paths with Palpatine, who was collecting Sith artifacts for himself and for his Master. So here are the clues the Order needed to link Palpatine to the Sith, but they needed time to develop.

Eight long years, in fact. Or rather, fifty chapters from the moment Qui-Gon relieved Darth Maul of his head.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Now, you all didn’t think I was going to let Padmé and Anakin just fade into obscurity, did you?

Of course not. The Jedi might have Luke, Leia, and Rey, but the Naberrie-Skywalker story doesn’t end there. Of course Padmé has to become a senator, of course Anakin has to come back to Coruscant. Their role in Book IV will be smaller than Book III, but still important. Other voices need their turn.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

And speaking of other voices…

Yes, the Force Kitty is back.

And not just as a voice directing Obi-Wan to go to Ilum. Not saying more than that, because, well spoilers. But Rori’s showing up for Obi-Wan, and there may be friends…

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

I think I’m going to park it here. I hope you enjoyed this week’s chapter and all the happenings, inside the Temple and out and about in the Galaxy. Plot is bubbling up all over the place.

See you next week!
