Summary: Obi-Wan Kenobi has never known it, but he has always been the Force’s Champion, destined to suffer infinite sadness in defense of the Light. On his last turn on the wheel, responsibility for The Chosen One, the false child of prophecy, had been thrust upon him with no warning, and Darkness held the upper hand.

But this time, the Force has marshaled its power and will protect its Champion until the time is right, no matter how long Obi-Wan has to wait and how much he has to suffer.

Or,

Obi-Wan is reborn as a twelve-year old.

He wakes up on a slavers’ ship, with all of his prior life’s memories intact, and he’s bound for Tatooine with a Force-inhibitor collar around his neck, a bomb implanted in his spine, and no way of knowing what state of the Galaxy is in.

Just another day in the life of the Force’s Champion.

Chapter Summary: Obi-Wan goes to visit Bruck, who drops a bombshell on him.

And half a galaxy away, Dooku gets a comm message from someone he doesn’t expect.

I didn’t have a lot of time for writing this week, just about 3k in total, which pisses me off, because I have so much story in my head and I’m afraid if I don’t get it out, I’m going to lose it. And I don’t know if next week will be much better.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

I don’t have a lot to say about the contents of this week’s chapter. As I mentioned last week, this one and last week’s were were originally intended as a single chapter and were supposed to be the first chapter of Book IV but with a planned time skip in the beginning of Book IV, putting all of this in the beginning of that book didn’t make sense. I had also split up the two chapters because as a single chapter it was just too big — over 10k, and the scenes were discrete — mostly Qui-Gon for the first 5k and mostly Obi-Wan for the rest.

And so, there you have it — two kind of odd-ball chapters that aren’t quite advancing the time-travel plot line (or maybe they are????) tacked on to the end of Book III.

Also, a shoutout to the commenter who gave me the idea about Rey being Dooku’s offspring. Way back when, I had an exchange in the comments about this, about the sheer stupidity of Rey being Palpatine’s granddaughter — that lineage comes out of nowhere (even though in the Legends novel Darth Plagueis Palpatine as a young man is something of a fuckboy), canon had to make her father a clone. The wise commenter I was chatting with said it would be better to have made Rey Dooku’s granddaughter and I incepted with this idea. I do hope that they are still reading and pop into the comments to claim the idea!

As for the whole arc with Bruck and Obi-Wan, this is a bit of self-indulgence for me. I love the friendship between these two and I don’t have a lot of room in the story to write it anymore. Quinlan is taking on a much bigger role, Siri is off-planet almost all the time, and Obi-Wan and Bant never really developed that closeness.

I needed a way to wrap up Obi-Wan and Bruck’s storyline in a way that felt satisfying to me. It might feel a little extreme — but this is the snapback of Obi-Wan’s great Force gift. It hit hard because of the abrupt departure and the length of time that Obi-Wan was away from the Temple. I think it will also be the last time we see something like this, at least with Bruck — he’ll get knighted in the next year, and he’ll start having a knight’s responsibilities. More off-planet relief work, but for shorter time periods, and he’ll meet someone that will give him the love and affection that he’s been looking for, within the parameters of his duties and the Jedi life.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this week’s chapter. Buckle up, next week’s a doozie.
