"We Shall Come Home" was conceived during a very difficult period in my life. An LJ friend had put out a general call for Peter/Neal prompts and I responded with "What if Peter and Neal are turned into dogs and Clinton has to chase after them?"
The friend wasn't all that interested and didn't mind that I wanted to write it myself. This was right around the time that my dad was hospitalized for his final illness. And so instead of going all cracky, it became filled with all of the angst I was experiencing in real life.
2:What scene did you first put down
I am a very linear writer, which means I always start with the first scene, in this case - Peter and Neal driving out to Pennsylvania and getting lost. And hitting the deer.
I think I wrote the first 17k in about a week.
11:What do you like best about this fic?
There are a lot of things I really love about this fic - the symbiosis between Peter as the Pathfinder and Neal as the Hunter. I love Moz and Diana bonding, Hughes accepting what happened without thinking he was crazy. Peter's homecoming, the final scene with Neal.
But what I love best are actually my OCs here - the Pennsylvania State Troopers, Eduardo Montoya, the children who save Neal, the veterinarians. They all are very much "real" people to me.
Thank you so much for asking about this story. It's one of my favorites.
