X is for box – The Boxer – Simon & Garfunkel (Bridge Over Troubled Water) and The Boxer – Carbon Leaf (Echo, Echo)
Today is a two-for-one. The classic S&G tells the tale of a man alone, isolated by his choices:
In the clearing stands a boxer,
And a fighter by his trade
And he carries the reminders
Of ev'ry glove that laid him down
Or cut him till he cried out
In his anger and his shame,
"I am leaving, I am leaving"
But the fighter still remains.
But the Carbon Leaf song, which I had discovered through a precursor to Pandora over a decade ago, is a song about a battling couple:
Couldn't ask for a better day, two by two
To the ring to the right point of view
Each retreat to the corner that's definied by you
To the ring to the right point of …
Lonely Reign
She is the Boxer, she knows
when and where to strike
He is the Boxer, he knows,
no peaceful sleep tonight
And for all the imagery, this is not a violent song – but one about the normal give-and-take, push-and-pull between partners.
And ironically, there is a front page article in today's New York Times about the barbarism of the fading sport of boxing.
