The biggest problem Neal has is that everyone's too willing to exonerate him - he's never really held accountable for his actions. When he finally sees the cost of his life as a con man, he takes ALL the blame. Neal's never really grown up - and this martyr reaction is typical of that.
But one hopes that he WILL grow up and become responsible for his actions.
