It's hard to watch him see only the bad in himself, only the fallout and none of the good that he's done while working with Peter.
Looking at Neal through this story it's as if he is a classic tragic hero. Yes, everyone he loves get hurt, because of him, or so he thinks. But, every time someone he loves get hurts, he hurts too.
The saddest part, is even though Neal as you once described him in some fic, is a big ball of id, he never set out to hurt anyone and he has never been happy when the chips fell badly.
The Amy/Rachel dichotomy and Keller's button pushing may just lead our boy down the path to permanent white hat-hood.
