I saw it as Peter neither being an expert in handling such equipment, nor having his head in the right place to check them seeing as he was busier with silently communicating with Neal. It could also be that he avoided dealing with the equipment in general out of fear that he may show his lack of expertise while doing so and tip off Booth.
