I was not familiar with the German term, but the term in the US legal system is "first look".
They say - write what you know, and this is what I know, but I really tried to avoid going down a rabbit hole with the legal stuff. Neal's case may very well present a unique question for the legal system. He's a felon on parole, with limited 4th Amendment rights (privacy, search and seizure, freedom of association), but he has definite personal liberty rights (14th Amendment). But how does all of this affect his contractual relationship with his employer - who is technically his client, since he's a consultant and not an employee. As a attorney specializing in contract law and employee relations, I find Neal's situation quite interesting.
Most of what I do is so dry and tedious, watching paint dry can be more fun, but I like the challenge of interweaving it into the well-developed characters on WC.
