The revelation that Hagen was determined to "snare" Neal and Peter, and would have tried something else if Peter's arrest hadn't handed him an opportunity -- that makes so much sense. It doesn't quite excuse Neal's choices, but as with so much that's happened, if he'd made "better" choices the outcome might have been even worse. Poor Neal.
I love that Neal wouldn't let Peter evade the issue -- bit of a role reversal there.
