From my point of view. It was less than 2 weeks after partial knee replacement. So now I'm cold, no power, no internet , no husband who's at work on nightshift and my knee hurts. After Sandy: now have smart phone,and will make hotel reservations right away and have radio with batteries. Normally keep flashlight, water, candles, non-perishables. The cats kept me company and warm.
