It's pretty much been set up that way hasn't it? I can't see any way back to a friendship for these two, at least no way back that doesn't ring false. Maybe the writers can pull it off but I suspect I'm going to have to lean on the fanfic writers like yourself to get the characters out of the corner the WC canon writers have painted them into.
