I agree with you about Ruiz. I had rewatched BoH a few times, and had a hard time with how one-dimensional Ruiz is. There's clearly some backstory between him and Peter (I think I read an early fic that had him as Peter's probie - which doesn't make sense at all)...and maybe one day I'll explore that - try and flesh the character out a bit.
Thank you for your supportive comments on Neal's reaction. As I noted in my response to the immediately preceeding comment, even if Neal's dealt with the trauma and done a masterful job in keeping it in his past -- there are still going to be triggers. I was trying very, very hard not to be exploitative or sensationalist, and I hope I've succeeded.
