I've thought so often of how much Neal has lost, and how much he has never had the chance to have, all b/c of the way his life has gone. Yes, he's made some bad choices, and done things that were definitely illegal, but how much of that is (for lack of a better phrase) the lack of nurturing he's had, vs. his "nature"? He loves so deeply, and is so willing to sacrifice himself for those he loves — I can only imagine what sort of life he might have led if he'd, say, had a family more similar to how Peter and/or El few up.
I'm glad that El was able to get that through to Peter, even if he seems to have figured out a few things in the last few months now ;-)
