Space Station 76 - Not Really a Review
Sep. 21st, 2014 08:28 amThere is a price for living in New York. I pay an insane amount of taxes. Getting anywhere that's outside of the state takes hours and a lot of tolls. Our local politicians redefine the term corrupt. But that's okay - because sometimes a movie I want to see opens nowhere else but New York City and Los Angeles.
Like Space Station 76. I was bummed that this movie was going straight to DVD (not even Blu-Ray), but what was I going to do? Order it on Amazon like everyone else!
Except that for some reason, Sony (which picked up the distribution), decided to release it in just two cities (and just two theaters for one weekend), if only to qualify it for the Academy Awards (which kindasorta makes no sense, given the film itself).
So, at the meet-up earlier this month, I made plans with a bunch of friends to see it. And I'm definitely glad I did. Not only was the day spent with friends - both before and after the movie a total blast, I really enjoyed the movie, too.
SS76 was showing at the venerable Quad Cinemas a few blocks west of Union Square. I decided to take the train in very early and do a little midtown shopping before going down to the Village and meet up with the rest of the gang. It was a nice day and instead of hopping on the subway or catching a cab, I walked from 37th down to 13th. Not that far, but given the state of my feet (not great), it was just the amount of distance I could walk without crippling myself.

Not going to say more than this, but this is Matt's best performance in a theatrically released movie (i.e., everything but TNH). His character could be something of a cartoon, but it's not. Ted is funny, sympathetic, pitiable, smart, and even a little silly. Which I think sums up the entire movie.
I can't wait for my copy to arrive from Amazon so I can watch it again. I'll put it this way, I'd enjoy and recommend SS76 even if Matt wasn't in it.
