Summary: In the aftermath of a brutal battle, Lt. Damien Toth finds a wounded enemy soldier on the battlefield. The young man refuses to give his name and prefers death to captivity and enslavement. Impressed by his grit, Damien claims him and renames him, promising him freedom after seven years of service. But 'Cole' has a bloody past and secrets that will come back to haunt them both.
Notes: For those of you who have read other Halcrest stories, this one takes place before the events of Brothers of the Watch and The Outcast, but at the same time as Scarce Loyalty.
( Even in the failing light, Damien could see that the Saark River was running red with blood. Corpses floated in the water and littered the banks, the victims of pikes and swords. Flies were already buzzing at them, and crows were starting to circle overhead. )
