Written for [livejournal.com profile] photoash, for the iTunes Song Number Meme. She gave me #11,111 , which is Fortuna Imperatrix Mundi, (Fortune, Empress of the World) the very famous opening song in Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana. This is one of the most recognized pieces of classical music, frequently used in movies, commercials, and by political pundits, usually to convey a sense of doom. However, the words of the song are not so much about doom, but the hopelessness of trusting fortune, and that both the powerful and the meek are the same before the hand of fate.
