I'm sort of ok with Neal being deceptive because he kinda lost my sympathy when we learned last season how Kate was trying to get away from him and how he treated her. And I'm glad Peter doubts Neal, not just because his instincts are correct, but because Neal's done a lot of sneaky shit to Peter that he didn't really get called on that much (I mean, attempted murder?)
On the other hand, despite how I didn't like it, Neal did have a blind spot for Kate so his lying was understandable. But this isn't to get a lover back, it's just to be rich, which does largely go against the con artist we've been presented with thus far, in my opinion.
