El watched the small, sad, bitter drama play out in the main room of Obscurity. For such a brief time, the three of theme were so happy – a family. She wondered if they ever could be like that again.
She loved Peter, and she supposed her first loyalty should be to him. She was his wife - his legal wife. But now, she didn’t know how she could go on with him. The man she married and loved for more than a decade shouldn’t be able to use another human being like that. Even in the name of safety.
She stepped out of the shadows and both men looked at here. It was late and she wanted to go to bed.
“Neal – come.” She held out a hand to him, but she looked at Peter, hoping he understood that the choice she made wasn’t so much a rejection as a expression of her still simmering anger.
As they left the room, Satchmo got up to follow and they both looked back. Peter looked like a man facing his execution. Right now, Elizabeth had no compassion for Peter. But Neal did, despite everything. He told Satchmo to say with his master.
