White Collar Fic - The Blood Of Helios - Vampire World - Background and a Bit of Fun
My friends...this past week was a bit out of control (yes - the visit with Tatt DeBomer got my vampire head all screwed up), and try as I might, I couldn't quite finish the planned chapter. But rest assured, Peter is recovering nicely from his, ahem, ordeal. And Neal's settling in nicely, satisfied that he can, if necessary, claim an upper hand with Captain Burke. He's been spending some time trying to figure out the odd sensations he's been feeling. Oh, not just those - Neal's well aware of the attraction, and he's not yet prepared to act on it. YET.
It's these other feelings - with the push and pull of power and vision that are troubling him. First it's June and her magics, and then the strange doings with the Captain's wife. He didn't think anything would be scarier than having a 300 pound tiger draped over him, but then Lauren wants his blood and then the Captain wants to execute her and Neal's beginning to feel a bit like Custard the Cowardly Dragon - all his wants is a nice safe cage. Then he remembers - that's just what he had for ten years. And it nearly killed him.
Prince Moz, the exiled fae, is waiting for Neal back at the Summer Queen's palace. He's an old and dear friend of June and the late Byron - they were the first to give him shelter when his taller and infinitely more hirsute cousins deemed him unacceptable for the Shining Court. Moz knows where the Dutchman's holed up, and he'll be able to get that tapestry fixed. June's housekeeper, Mairead and her brownie cousins are distant kin.
Jimmy Squarefoot's looking forward to meeting Neal too. He never cared to much for the fat and fatuous Frank, but fifty years is almost the blink of an eye to a creature over a thousand years old. Jimmy may like to write epic poetry more than he likes breaking bones, but he's still a monster. As Neal will learn when Jimmy wakes him up one morning.
So, what about that cut scene? It's a thousand plus words about Shapeshifter El. She's got the mother of all hangovers, and she's pretty pissed off.
ANNNNNNNNNNND I'm an idiot. The file is not on my home computer (I know, I know ... I shouldn't write porn in the office). I'll post that first thing tomorrow morning.
In lieu of the cut scene, let me give you a little more information about The Gift.
As I noted in the Glossary that accompanied the Prologue, way back when, The Gift is the exchange of blood between Master and subordinate vampires. But it's a lot more than than. As Lauren tried to explain to Neal, blood taken from a human satisfies a physical hunger, but it does nothing to maintain or increase a vampire's power. This is why most vampires will naturally form into a Kiss - there is an instictual need to share blood amongst their own kind. This sharing combines simultaneous feeding and some form of sexual congress. The higher ranking a vampire is, the more powerful the blood, and the more power that is transferred. The purpose of the simultaneous feeding is for the more powerful vampire to take back and control the flood of power. The sexual act reinforces the bindings and the loyalties - it is a vestigal human trait.
In the context of the Cadre - the exchange is even more important. All power flows down from the Master, through Peter and then to his lieutenants. So, what Peter takes in from Hughes will ultimately be shared amongst the entire cadre and then down through the lesser Whyccrid vampires. Whyccrid is unusually disciplined, enforcing the bindings and limitations - in fact, this is one of the secrets of the Kiss' power and preeminence. Much of that has to do with Master Hughes and Captain Burke and their enforcement of the oaths that bind the vampire to the Kiss.
But what about last week's scene with Master Hughes? Reese, for the first time, didn't take blood from Peter. What does THAT mean? Well, I'm not telling...just yet. It's important.
And a little about Peter's schedule - the moon phases are quite important to him:
Bright Moon is for The Master, Reese Hughes
Waxing and Waning Gibbous is for his Senior Lieutenant, Clinton Jones
Waxing and Waning Half Moon is for his Second Lieutenant, Diana Barrigan
Waxing and Waning Quarter Moon is for his Third Lieutenant, Lauren Cruz. She has been suspended, so Clinton and Diana will each share The Gift twice with Peter during the lunar month.
Dark Moon is for Elizabeth Burke - She is not a vampire, but The Gift is both symbolic of her loyalty to her husband and his Kiss and it confers the protection and honor of the Kiss upon her.
Writing Vampire World is both hard work and a lot of fun. Back at the start, I was playing poetry parody prompts with
gyzym and she inspired me to this bit of Vampire World fun (the original excerpt is in Chapter I). With deep forgiveness (or maybe not) to Walt Whitman:
O CAPTAIN! my Captain! our moonlit trip is done;
The ship has hidden from the sun, the blood we sought is won;
The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting,
While follow eyes the steady heart, the vessel red and beating:
But O heart! heart! heart!
O the bleeding drops of red,
Where on the deck my Captain strides,
Naked, sexy and undead.
O Captain! my Captain! rise up and hear the bells;
Rise up—for you the blood is running — for you the hearts beat;
For you veins and arteries pump —for you the mortals a-lusting;
For you they call, the swaying mass, their eager necks a-turning;
Here Captain! dear Vampire!
This arm beneath your head;
It is some dream that on the deck,
You’re naked, sexy and undead.
My Captain does not answer, his teeth are sharp and bright;
My vampire bites into my arm, he has hunger, I will not fight;
The ship is anchor’d safe in the dark, its voyage closed and done;
From fearful trip, the vampire ship, comes in with object won;
Exult, O shores, and ring, O bells!
But I, with mournful tread,
Watch as my Vampire Captain lies,
Naked, sexy and undead.
We'll be back with a new chapter next Monday. I hope you've enjoyed this bit of background and the cut scene that will be posted tomorrow morning.
