He was. Funny, thoughtful, considerate - the very best of men. Excuse me, the very best of the human race.

Not to say there were times he didn't annoy the pants off me, or that he didn't have his own foibles, but he was the living definition of what it meant to be a husband and a father.

I was truly blessed to be raised by this man.

Just ponder for a moment the breadth of his world experiences. The unimagined wonders and horrors he saw in his time on earth. One lifetime. I used to attend my father's Navy reunions and would sit in a room full of old men and listen to them reminisce. Something my father never did at home. I could see these men transform to strapping young sailors so far from the comfort of home and the familiar and the safe. And so much a band of brothers.

It was a funny thing, but my dad never talked about his time in the Navy. He enlisted at 16, and of course, back then, he didn't have to provide a birth certificate. He was a C-B and was shipped out to the Philippines. I know he saw action and was wounded, but he never ever discussed it. He was very proud of his service, but it stopped THERE.

That didn't preclude him from watching every war movie ever made. I used to tease him and "spoil" the ending, telling him "we won, you know."

He'd reply, "Yeah, I know. I was there."

Yeah, I love how blasé they were. Not a huge Brokaw fan but he got that Greatest Generation designation right.

Oh my goodness, that is such a 'Dad' picture! The polo shirt with the glasses sagging in the pocket is perfect.

He sounds perfectly lovely and his smile .... talk about the love in his eyes! There is no doubt that he is looking at his little girl.

You are one lucky lady to have had such a man in your life!

I had to edit this post (which was pre-drafted a month ago) when I realized it came out a few minutes after I posted this.

LOL. I'm sitting here trying various combinations to work out what GFSP could be, the words Giant, Floating, Stone and Penis somehow did not come to mind! Although I was guessing the 'p' might be Peter, so I wasn't total off!

My mom served in WW2 also. She was a nurse and a lieutenant in the Army Air Corp. (There was no separate Air Force then.) She told me about Basic Training and a few funny stories, but she never talked about the serious stuff, and I know there was a lot of it. She flew missions back and forth across the Atlantic bringing wounded soldiers home from the European Theater.

It's hard to lose a parent. But, it seems like you have wonderful memories of a rich and special childhood, and adulthood too, shared with your dad. Lucky you!

I have wonderful memories of both my mom and my dad. They were awesome human beings - neither of them were perfect, but they loved me and made me who I am today.
