Need Help with Female Comic Heroes

Writing a fic where a character (female) strongly identifies with female comic book heroes who have secret identities. Can anyone give me a list or point me to a guide?

Many thanks!

Barbara Gordon was Bargirl until she was shot by the Joker, then she become Oracle. While she was Oracle, she was part of Birds of Prey, which included Dinah Lance who was Black Canary II (Dinah's mother was the first Black Canary.) Now Barbara has been sort of retconned back to Batgirl. This is a VERY sore subject among female comic book fans.

Supergirl has been Linda Dangers and Clark Kent's cousin (can't remember her name)

Wonder Woman has been Diana Prince on and off throughout the years.

The new Batwoman has an alter ego but I can't remember who she is.

As you can tell I love DC characters. There is a great blot called DC Women Kicking Ass. It is a great place to find out about women superheroes in comics and women fans of comics.

I've been out of the comic book world for a a long time, and I remember it being a vast boys club, right across the board, but there were a few women here of there. I see you have a DC answer, so I'll stick with Marvel.

One of the strongest women I remember was a member of the X-Men. Her code name was Storm and her real name was Ororo. She became the leader of the X-Men for a long time. Her power was to control the weather. She had quite a backstory - surviving on her own somewhere in Africa from a very young age, becoming a pickpocket to survive until Professor X found her and recruited her.

Kitty Pryde was also a member of the X-Men. She was the youngest person to be allowed to join that team (thirteen), if you want someone younger. Her original code name was Sprite, but as she aged (maybe around the time she was fifteen or sixteen), she changed it to Shadowcat. She had the power to phase through solid object. I believe she also had a genius level IQ.

If you want someone who really turned their life around, then there is the Scarlet Witch. She was on the bad guy team, but switched sides, and became a valued member of the Avengers. Her real name was Wanda Maximoff.

I know there were more, but I don't remember a lot about them - one of the members of the Fantastic 4 was a woman, but I was never into that comic. There was also a team called the New Mutants, which was a spin-off of the X-Men, a team of teenagers. Several of them were girls, but again, I don't remember them very well. Just that one was a Native American.

Good luck.

To touch on the DC Universe:

-- Batgirl/Oracle = Barbara Gordon (she was the first Batgirl; others have followed)
-- Power Girl = Karen Starr
-- Wonder Woman = Diana Prince

Mind you, as with all comic book characters, whoever is currently writing the series can strongly define the character. I say that, because sometimes, the characters can just be written terribly. But, when the writers know what they're doing, the characters rock and their personalities just jump from the pages.

But I recommend "Oracle", one of my all time favorite heroes. She's smart, she's realistic, she's emotional, and she will NEVER let anyone define her but her.

When she's not saving the world, her name is Barbara Gordon, daughter of Commissioner Gordon in the Batman Verse.

Other DC:

Black Canary - Dinah Lance
Starfire - Kory Anders (though she's an alien, and her secret identity as a human is false)
Huntress - Helena Bertinelli/Helena Wayne
Fire - Beatriz da Costa
The Question - Renee Montoya
Miss Martian - Megan Morse (again, alien)

Heee... same here! I hope you don't mind that I join you and say *hi* as well. I figure two smiles and hellos are always better than one, especially in the morning :D
