I've been out of the comic book world for a a long time, and I remember it being a vast boys club, right across the board, but there were a few women here of there. I see you have a DC answer, so I'll stick with Marvel.
One of the strongest women I remember was a member of the X-Men. Her code name was Storm and her real name was Ororo. She became the leader of the X-Men for a long time. Her power was to control the weather. She had quite a backstory - surviving on her own somewhere in Africa from a very young age, becoming a pickpocket to survive until Professor X found her and recruited her.
Kitty Pryde was also a member of the X-Men. She was the youngest person to be allowed to join that team (thirteen), if you want someone younger. Her original code name was Sprite, but as she aged (maybe around the time she was fifteen or sixteen), she changed it to Shadowcat. She had the power to phase through solid object. I believe she also had a genius level IQ.
If you want someone who really turned their life around, then there is the Scarlet Witch. She was on the bad guy team, but switched sides, and became a valued member of the Avengers. Her real name was Wanda Maximoff.
I know there were more, but I don't remember a lot about them - one of the members of the Fantastic 4 was a woman, but I was never into that comic. There was also a team called the New Mutants, which was a spin-off of the X-Men, a team of teenagers. Several of them were girls, but again, I don't remember them very well. Just that one was a Native American.

Good luck.
