Today in Marriage Equality News - Éirinn go Brách!

Yesterday, the Republic of Ireland went to the polls to vote on a referendum to establish marriage equality, and right now, the only question is, how great was the margin by which it passed.

Here, in America, we talk about how quickly marriage equality has been adopted by the states - 36 in the last five years - but until 1993, homosexuality was a criminal act in the Republic of Ireland. Gay men and women were subject to the same Victorian-era laws used to prosecute Oscar Wilde in England.

Today, the Republic of Ireland becomes the first nation in the world to establish Marriage Equality by popular vote. Let's all raise a glass and toast the Old Sod and wear a bit of green (along with all the other colors of the rainbow) with pride.

Happy for Ireland, but equality shouldn't be up for a vote, you know! However, that said, this is a huge win for love.

(And your post was very well said.)

Totally agree! Human rights should not be a subject for popular vote (hate to think about Texas or my home state of Georgia), but it's still a day to celebrate. May this be the first of many!
