A little background on the Peter - Elizabeth courtship (without spoilers):
Elizabeth in this story is probably no older than Elizabeth in canon (mid-30's), but she's very unusual for a shapeshifter. They stay within their own packs and prides. Peter, at 350 years old, would be naturally cautious about a relationship with someone so young, and from a culture that is strongly monogamous (vampire culture, as I wrote, is just the opposite). El (as in canon) takes matters into her own hands...the marking would be how two shifters signal their willingness to take a mate, and she's following her species' instincts.
There are other reasons for their long courtship -- to be revealed in future chapters. But you'll get a deeper look into Peter and El's marriage in the two chapters after the one I post tonight.
