Neal buried his head in his hands. “Yeah, Peter. I know.”
“And yet you come here and the words just spill from your lips.” Peter shook his head, but more in exasperation than anger.
“It’s not as if Elizabeth doesn’t know.” Neal looked up, hope shining out of his eyes. “It’s not as if she didn’t give you everything but an engraved invitation.”
“That’s not the point. I’m your handler.”
“And you handled me so beautifully.”
Peter sighed. Yeah, this situation was out of control. “What do you want, Neal?”
“I want to know that what we had – it’s more than just a quick fuck in the night. That I mean more to you than a bit of strange. I don’t care if we never are together again – I just want to know that I mattered, that I matter to you.” Neal seemed breathless as he finished, as if he couldn’t keep those words inside another second longer.
Peter sat down next to him, closer than they’d normally sit. He took Neal’s face between his hands, cupping his cheeks, sweeping his thumbs across his eyelids. “You mean the world to me, Neal. You are part of my life whether you want it or not. There’s no where you could run that I wouldn’t find you. Remember that.” He pressed a soft, loving kiss on Neal’s lips, another one on his forehead as a benediction.
A deep, satisfied sigh came from the direction of the kitchen. Both men looked up. Elizabeth stood there, smiling. “It’s about time. I was afraid Neal was going to have to hold up a sign that said “I ♥ Peter.”
