Oh, Just a Couple of Things
Surfing on the Intertubes during lunch hour and found these:
What women want: Gay male romance novels!
This actually came my way via Erastes' blog. For those of you who don't read genre fiction, Erastes is an author of several wonderful m/m novels set during Regency England. I highly recommend her writing. Anyway, went you dig through the article's drivel and sort-of-snideness, the facts are really rather amazing. Harlequin Romance is now publishing same-sex stories, M/M romantic fiction is a driving seller for Amazon's Kindle and most of the best selling titles are written by women (this doesn't surprise me, as women outconsume men in almost all categories of fiction).
And on another note:
lionessvalenti has posted the start of a 30-day favorite female TV characters meme, and while I am not really inclined to do a whole day-by-day meme thing, I thought I'd do the whole thing at once. It actually became an interesting brain scratcher for me. I honestly watch very little series television - never really did, and these days - it's White Collar, the occasional ep of Law and Order, Burn Notice and nothing else. Except for Tuesdays at 10, when I do watch I batten back and forth between the news, HGTV and The Food Network.
So anyway, I'm sort of wracking my brains, trying to fill in this meme, when I come to the question:
Day Sixteen - Favorite mother character
I knew who I wanted, immediately - Jean Mary Hardcastle, from As Time Goes By, played by Dame Judi Densch. And you know what, there's an article in today's NY Times about her new autobiography, And Furthermore. How cool is that - I was thinking about Dame Judi just yesterday (and had to check out the Wikipedia entry for her character's full name), and suddenly she pops up in my newspaper.
And So, Dear Reader... I read the article only to find out that Dame Judi is playing Mrs. Fairfax in a new movie version of Jane Eyre! This is, perhaps my all time favorite book - I love it the way others love P&P or S&S, BUT MORE. I do have to say that the 1983 British television version, with a dreadfully too old Zehah Clarke as Jane but a deliciously brutal Timothy Dalton as Rochester is still the one that sticks in my head. The most two recent ones are unwatchable to me - the A&E version in '97 with Cirian Hinds (finally a truly ugly Rochester) and the 1996 movie, a Franco Zeferelli disaster with William Hurt (gah).
If there is anyone on my flist interested in going to see the Jane Eyre movie, let me know - because I'd love to have people to discuss it with.
And as for the Favorite Characters Meme, I figured since I took the time to fill it out, I might as well post it:

I remember an interview with Peter Paige that mentioned that no one would be walking straight if they had sex like the guys did on Queer as Folk, LOL!
On another note: the original La Femme Nikita series, OMG. Nikita and Michael slayed me. But, the very last episode made me proud of her and sad for her at the same time.

Re La Femme Nikita - do you remember what Control told Nikita about why the US was continuing to support Saddam Hussian? That without him the Middle East would fall into chaos, there would be years of anarchy because of the power vacuum? I think this was in 1998 - third or fourth season...how freakin' prophetic for a genre TV show, eh?

If you have any recommendations of male-written M/M erotic fiction, I'd love to check them out.

I don't remember ever really enjoying male written erotica - after the initial smut rush - most of the stories were pretty meh...not much focus on the internal motivation at all. The Nexus imprint was better than average, but not really my cup of tea after the first read.
